Interesting that Sunderland had a similar gap at the top to us and ended up nose diving and finishing in the play offs, albeit scraping their way to promotion.

They struggled post Xmas I think but has enough points on the board by then to keep in the play offs comfortably.

We need to add some top quality in Jan to keep us going

At this stage of the season they went 6 games without a win and so by the end of 18 games ‘only’ had 33 points.

Equivalent run for us

Wrexham (a)
Sheff U (H)
Stoke (a)
WBA (H)
Boro (a)
Charlton (H)

Tough run but you’d be disappointed taking 5 points or fewer

For me the thing that stands out is that the parachute teams and favourites were hot on top spots heels at that point

For us they are much further back

I think at this point it’s highly unlikely that two parachute clubs go up automatically. Southampton and Sheffield United’s starts have been too bad, Leicester have a point deduction hanging over them and Ipswich, while being the most likely to get to the auto, also haven’t started great. There will be a spot there for someone like us to grab, we just have to keep doing what we’re doing. Evidence so far would suggest that we’re better than Middlesbrough, Millwall, Bristol City and the like but it’s a long season and there will be plenty more twists and turns to come.
