Is it me or are we not actually good at this..... (5 Viewers)

ONE of football’s most enduring adages is that attack is the best form of defence – but Mark Robins insists that’s not necessarily the case when you’re coping with set-piece pressure.

The Coventry City boss habitually packs his penalty area for free-kicks and corners and he’s certainly not alone in that policy. Although you could hardly find more disparate personalties than his three immediate predecessors at the Ricoh Arena – Chris Coleman, Aidy Boothroyd and Andy Thorn – they, too, favoured the ‘one back all back’ philosophy in such situations.

Some supporters (and journalists) prefer the old-school ploy of having one or two players poised upfield, (A) as a conduit for potential counter-attacks and (B) to ensure that any half-cleared balls aren’t hoovered up by the opposition and pumped straight back into the danger zone.

And the debate was brought to a semi-official head this week when Juanbambo (not, one suspects, his real name) was selected for our weekly Fans Ask feature and posed the question: “What benefit do you see in having no outlet at corners? We seem to have all 11 in the box every time. Does this not restrict us?”

Robins, as usual, gave the issue his full attention at Thursday’s press conference but was having none of it. With the air of a man who’s heard the argument before he said: “I totally understand that view, but no.

“It’s not about policy, it’s about players – who can do what, knowing what the opposition like to do and probably will do, and having players in position to try to nullify a threat.

“Some managers will employ zonal marking and some will do man marking and some a mixture of both. Some may leave three up on the halfway line later on in games if they are losing but the likelihood is you end up outnumbered and they send someone in so you’re a little bit light. You just have to be on your toes because it’s a bit of a cat and mouse thing.

“I’m not going to go through it all but, in short, no, it doesn’t restrict us. We’ve probably got enough players to cope with set plays but I wouldn’t say we’ve got an ultra defensive line-up from corners. If we get the ball away then we’ve got players in the side who can break.”

But, we asked, pressing Juanbambo’s point, if you’ve got one of your players in a forward position, doesn’t that at least oblige the other lot to withdraw one or two of their players from your penalty area?

“They don’t have to,” insisted Robins; “it depends on your players. I’m not closed-minded but I’m happy with the way we do things and at this moment in time I’d much prefer to continue with that.

“There’s no right and wrong and if we kept conceding goals from set plays then there might be a change in there – but generally speaking that would be a change of personnel, not tactics.”

excellent post 'don',
i'd expect several major changes during the close season,
regardless of the outcome,
i think there may be 4 or 5 departures @ the end of the season,
i.e. GKeeper, CBack, Midfield, Wide, & Striker,
all credit to MR though for galvanising OUR club

Are you saying you expect changes in the board SBT?

Do you mean for letting a manager who they didn't trust sign 9/10 players then sack him after three games.
Then we have 5 defeats on the trot.
Then finally they sign the right man. However it is a tight thing if he will be able to pull it off or not.

Or are you talking about the rent debacle that has possibly meant we missed out on two players in the summer.

Who do you think will go?

SBT who, exactly do you determine, are the board,
& further the players you mention were not all buys, but included loans,
i notice that Messrs F & W have been relatively silent of late,

Yes I have a feeling a certain shock decision has led to a panicked silence and a restructuring of a battle plan.

The good thing is they will need a lot of success in the pitch before they unleash it. To get us fans backing them.

Excuse that, I should've said "brought in", the point remains the same, MR has been allowed to manoeuvre in the transfer market.

Note: see how you missed out we brought in Leon Clarke, test failed buddy.

Errm, I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but we have left someone up for opposition corners on several occasions under Mark Robins.

i wasn't aware that it was a test, however,
as someone who has followed the club for xx number of years,
i merely express my frustration as to our progress & potential,
but see that we have a manager who could take us to higher levels,
given the right support,
from my point of view i wish only for the betterment of CCFC,
there has, IMO, been far too much rhetoric & vagueness put to 'joe public' by the current incumbents,
will that change ?
certainly not on the evidence of the last fans forum, August 2012 i think,
surely time for F & W to extrapolate

Like Robins says it is about adapting to situations an opposition teams, mostly though when we have left someone up we have been looking for a goal or chasing the game

We used to leave Marlon King upfront for corners when we had Westwood as well. Westwoods distribution and Kings control made it quite effective. It does seem to vary under Robins. Murphys distribution is also pretty decent - leaving someone like Moussa or McSheffery upfront seems logical, doubt they'd have much influence defending a corner.

I think our main problem defending set pieces is our small midfield. Wood and the Edge should handle it, but for a set piece you have lots of other players in there too.

Adams and Christie are both very attack minded. Baker, Fleck, sheffers, Jennings are all small and or light weight.

Baker is 6ft. Jennings wins almost all his headers agree on other 2

Personally I'd leave Sheffers up purely because he's poor at aerial battles. No major criticism, he's good on the counter though. Credit to Robins for answering the questions though.
