What moment still haunts you? (8 Viewers)

It's obvious but in 4 decades from the 90s onwards the big Wembley moments hit me at my core. The two things I think about regularly are:

1. That Hamer goal Vs Luton and the sheer feeling in that moment that we were going to win the game and promotion. The relief and the noise.
2. That Torp winner. What made it special was his collapse on the floor in complete elation, while all of us were going absolutely bonkers in the stands.

I would say these moments replay in my head every day or so, I genuinely wonder whether that will ever stop. The Portuguese have a word called Saudade which doesn't have an equivalent in English, I never really understood how to apply it, but I think these moments are a good fit.

Bristol City away. 90 mins of straight long balls over Clive Platt's head. Sh*tty rainy day. Every goal was sh*t. Just so bad.

I remember that. Wasn't it an early KO too?

This is going to sound really random, but there's no accounting for the moments that stick in your mind.

Stan Bowles scoring a very late winner against us in the FA Cup for QPR in 1974. Was at a party listening on the radio and we all had a drunken breakdown🍷🍻. Time has healed things a bit 😂.

Mine goes back a long way. The league cup semi final 2nd leg last minute defeat at West Ham.

It arguably led to the disbanding of the most talented group of young players we’ve ever had.
Yeah, a really horrible night in London 😭

Goddard's goal equalising the tie hurt almost as much as the last-minute winner.

Sadly torp will always be biggest - we will likely never get another chance / have that match situation ever again.

- Moldovan header 98 v Sheff Utd haunts me

- Hamer getting injured more than dabo pen.

- Wright Header v Sunderland

- Selling Keane & McAllister - you knew what was coming.

- drinkell misses 2nd leg 91 semi final v Forest.

The Dabo penalty.

There was a feeling around when you saw it was him stepping up, and the crestfallen response from other members of the crowd. Even though he hadn't missed yet, it was pretty clear that many around had a feeling that he probably would.

Then of course he did, and it was all over so fast. Horrible feeling.

For me, the moment when whoever it was (Panzo?) trod on the ball and gifted Luton the "goal" at the end of extra time...... that was worse than the penalty shootout loss for me.

*obviously it was ruled out due to VAR/handball/something, so it was only momentary.... but that was a terrible feeling.

The penalty shootout was easier to take, because disappointing as it was, we all know pens are a complete lottery.

I don't think it tops the defeat at Villa Park though...... 2 up at half time, but then Villa started scoring, and news came through that Derby were winning, and the dawning that this was it.

My soul genuinely left my body after the Torp goal. I remember muttering "he's offside" as Wright got the ball, more out of force of habit rather than having a particularly good view, then Wright just trotted towards the box without anyone trying to stop him and I saw Torp casually ambling into the area again without anyone trying to stop him, then it was like the world went into slow motion as Wright put the slowest and most easily intercepted pass across the box and my mind was like "oh come on, someone's going to leather that". Then Torp got his toe into it and it's like the ball rolled into the net as slowly as a tortoise makes its way to a lettuce. Then it was like I *actually heard the sound of the ball hitting the net* and nothing else, and slowly stood up as if I knew that was what I was supposed to do but I couldn't comprehend what had actually happened. It wasn't until I felt the hands of the two guys behind me wrapping around my shoulders and physically yanking me over the back of my seat that everything suddenly snapped back into focus and oh my FUCK OH MY GOD HOLY SHIT JESUS CHRIST AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Then I saw the VAR CHECKING on the screen, and knew where it was going.

I will never, ever feel like I felt about that goal again.

Yes that was the worst moment of the game, thinking we'd gifted it to them through an inexcusable error.

Having thought long and hard about it I think I would get a little bit of closure on the Torp moment if we were to get promoted and we caught Man Utd on one of their embarrassing days and comfortably beat them at The CBS
It wouldn't even need to be an embarrassing day these days.

That's a wonderful post 💙

If it's any consolation, you and I were both correct in thinking Haji was offside. He was, but far more narrowly than I thought in real time. I actually anticipated the goal being overturned straight away, so I kind of missed out on the euphoria and maybe that helps me live with it.

VAR is a pain but it's not corrupt, and I've previously posted pictures to clearly confirm the offside decision, but so many people seem determined to feel robbed for the rest of their lives 🤷‍♂️

Disagree on this I'm afraid O'Hare's work was measured prematurely for me.

I left the second i saw Dabo walking towards the spot. Just knew he was missing. Me and the kids walking into the concourse at Wembley, hearing the Luton cheer and just saying 'knew it'

The Torp disallowed goal wins it by a long way. It was never offside and il go to my grave saying that. We were robbed of the greatest ever comeback in football history. Myself, the kids, my cousin all together, all crying our eyes out in disbelief shock and pride at what we had just seen. Hugging randomers also in floods of tears, the pure unrivalled joy. I still cannot and dont think I ever will be able to put into words that feeling of that monent. Nothing has ever come close. If you can bottle that and sell it you would be the richest man in the world

What a fucking moment man

Its the obvious answer but I still reckon I think about the Torp 'goal' every day and feel gutted about how close to the perfect footballing moment we were until it was taken away from us.

How can you say that with authority? So much uncertainty around exactly when O'hare released the ball, how accurately the line was drawn, the frame rate especially with Wright and the dfender running in opposite directions. A millisecond either way and the picture looks so different. Enough uncertainty to give in favour of the attacking team, and that's a hill I'm prepared to die on.
