Let's forget about the personal insults and have an ordinary debate on Simms.

On his day Simms can be a handful and score goals. The problem is he doesn't have many good days. Most of his good days have been in a cup game against lower sides not playing to their full strength. His first touch is poor most of the time. For his size he is knocked off the ball easily. Last season there wasn't a club in the top divisions in Europe that could compete with our headed goals. You would have thought a striker bigger than most defenders would have scored lots but he was on a par with a defender that had to get to the other end of the pitch to have an attempt as well as look after his defensive duties.

Simms hasn't suddenly become shite. He just doesn't suit our style of play. I defended him a lot last season but there comes a time where you need to take a reality check. Our main striker, Wright, missed a lot of last season and still wasn't right after he returned. Simms had a massive chance to show his worth but returned 6 goals. That's just not good enough for a side looking good for promotion this season.

BTA got more stick than Simms last season for his bad decision making. The coaching staff have spent time with him just like they have with Simms. His decision making is on another level so far. He runs at defences and makes them panic pulling them out of position. Simms seems to spend most of his time waiting for something to happen. He isn't going on a run past players then getting a shot off.

Nobody hates Simms. What they have noticed is take away his goals in the cups against lower sides the return in the league is poor. This is for a big money signing on a big wage. The game against Manchester United? Why can't he get motivated for the league games which are our bread and butter?

In the other posters defence, i can vouch for it first hand. I used to respect your posts and look out for your comments but in recent times you’ve turned a bit rude if a persons opinion on something is different to your own.
Footballs a game of opinions mate, it’s a forum, people are all bound to see things differently, just chill out a little bit if people’s views are different to yours.

In what team could you see Ellis Simms doing well? Like if we were to manage to get him out on loan where do you see him regaining his confidence?

I agree with other posters, he only really had half a good season with us, first half of the first season with us he was pants and then came good after Christmas.

Simms and Bassette you want them to both do well but for one reason or another neither of them have done it.
Simms has the frame to smash through people, hold it up, etc but seems to be a bit shy with it.
Bassette you can see real raw attributes similar to how Gyokeres was but was always offside and couldn’t ever seem to take his chances

I've not changed. If i think someone is posting rubbish i'll say. I've always given balanced opinions on Simms, like many I'm done with him now, he's not good enough.

Simms needs to be the focal point of the attack, ideally in a 2 I think.

when I say focal point, balls in behind, down channels and on the end of chances.

his partner can do the donkey work etc.

I believe there is a player/goal scorer there, sadly I just think it’s best for all concerned to go different ways.

Can’t really remember many games after the Wolves game where he was any good for us. Before then he was banging them in and then it all went dry from what I vaguely remember.
Overall in those 19 goals he scored a few braces, the hat trick etc so there wasn’t actually that many games he’s actually scored in

Well I have to stand by my original opinion and say he did well in that Sheffield Wednesday game, but it didn't springboard him on to anything unfortunately.
After season 1, you could see the issues but there was enough to be positive about him going forward. Last season he was genuinely hopeless and still looks well off.

A major problem with Simms is he makes little happen by himself. In particular his movement in the box is so poor. He generally needs it laying on a plate for him.
An established striker at this level would make a big difference to us. Although the priority at this point has to be to improve the quality of our defence.

We definitely need an upgrade but there's only a certain level of player who's prepared to sit on the bench and have the odd cameo.

I think a lot of his problems are because he lacks a confident mindset, he needs to believe in himself, like others have done in the past.

I don't like using 'second choice' especially as a player as expensive as Simms should be looking to start, but I think a good standard second choice gets plenty of minutes of the course of a long hard Championship season.

I genuinely believe Bassette will have a good future, he is very raw, and has much to learn, but he has all the attributes that Simms is lacking, strength, aggression, and a fight for everything mentality, not to mention a good bit of shithousery.

Unfortunately he's fallen out with Lampard somehow and is unlikely to get a look on here now, so he needs to move on ASAP to further his career.

That would also free up a squad place for a new signing or loan.

Do you think the academies he’s passed through didn’t see that? I think at this point there’s a limited amount you can do to improve something that’s innate really. You can adapt your own tactics and his a bit to counter it, maybe - but he’s got a foot like a sledgehammer.

Simms is a real conundrum and I find him really likeable, a sensitive and modest guy who seems to struggle with the expectation and the environment he’s in. I’m not sure Lampard is really the coach for him, but I had a lot of hope he would be.

A lot of criticism of his application and execution is valid, as always a lot of people have to be really nasty about it and project their own issues and hatred onto the player, which is not fun.

Had we another similar option I think he’d benefit from a move or at least a loan but doesn’t seem likely. Still hope he can turn it around.

Well Ellis Simms, you're 24 going on 25 years old, you're not some wet behind the ears kid anymore, you're contracted to a good English championship club with a very very talented and experienced coaching setup, so when are you going to start using this God given talent to its fullest extent then?

It’s more weird the fans that seem desperate for him to fail.

Certainly not desperate to see him fail I am desperate to see him start earning his wage for the job he supposed to do, he has been appaling, for quite some time. If he continues to play for us he has to make a positive contribution, the fans are not stupid and can tell a good player from a poor one and he was pretty poor last season considering what he achieved in the season prior, so its step up or step out and I would think the management team are frustrated to hell with him too so if we can get shut and replace thats the way forward the club are hoping for!

I was hugely critical of Simms last season. His performances to be honest were beyond unacceptable some games.

It's a small sample but he looks far more assured and a much bigger threat, especially aerially.

Having that goal threat off the bench, especially in games where we might be up against it is gold dust so long may it continue.
