Don’t play as much these days since having our first child 18 months ago, and I have been wondering recently if I’ve been losing the bug - I had been utterly obsessed for the last 5 or so years.

I play off 4 these days. Got down to 1.8 before my daughter came along.
What's your local course?

Horribly inconsistent when I played regularly - scores ranged between 84 and 137 (last one was particularly painful/hilarious). Haven’t played properly in a couple of years, but did 9 holes at Nuneaton in the spring and carded what I think was a 44.

I do want to get back playing but have a lot of other commitments so golf’s kinda fallen by the wayside.

Nope, miles from it!

Well I suppose I could technically become a PGA Pro with that level of scoring, but when I think of 'pro' I think of guys who compete, and their handicaps (if they had one, pros don't have handicaps) would be like +6 or +7, which is just obscene - that's 7 or 8 shots better than me, the same difference between me and a 10 handicap.

Yes, just to put it in perspective, Andy Sullivan went round Nuneaton in 59 a few years back.

If Joe Bloggs can go round in less than 100-that’s a good round right? Never been near that though 😩
Need to get the clubs out again-haven’t been for a few years.

Don’t forget, you also need to have a full repertoire of golf jokes to hand. Could need them at any moment.

When I was young I wasn’t very good. But I was determined. I practiced for hours and hours every week for years and years.
Now I’m old.

Dusted the clubs off for the first time since 2023 and got back on it. Played nine or ten rounds since May. Thought I’d made some improvement on the weekend but went tonight and was awful. Ashamed to say I chucked my driver after putting two out of bounds off the tee in a row but thankfully there was nobody around. Enjoying though so will be keeping it up until the weather turns.

My lad (9) is massively into golf and it's making me want to play more. Never been great, aim is always to break 100.

Took him to Stoneleigh Par 3 last week, first time I'd picked up a club in well over a year. Thought I played ok, was hitting the ball fairly well, missed a few putts which could've brought my score down early on, went round in 37.... He went round in 39. It's annoying that he has more natural ability than me!

We used to have a few of us that used to play (try) maybe once a month-used to get some great cheap rounds on Tee times-some for less than a tenner a round! Wonder if that website is still a thing?
Probably need to make a few phone calls and try and get the band back together 😀

Not sure that particular site still exists but golfnow is the most popular online tee booking platform.

Unfortunately it's very rare to find rounds under a tenner these days, like everything else in life it's a lot more expensive now.

Played the same course by me for the seventh time in eight weeks tonight. Feel like my good shots have improved but my bad ones have gotten worse and I haven’t made any improvement in the round scores. Tough game but great feeling when you catch it sweet. Several people have recommended a lesson and think I’ll give it a whirl.

Took him to Stoneleigh again yesterday.... Early morning start after a long effort at Gala Day (on the back of him being poorly last week) and understandably both of us were a lot worse...

Got soaked too.

Then parred the last hole and ready to go again

Have a look at Kondor Kidz. They run events for kids without handicaps or 36+.

Cheers for the heads up.

He played in the Adidas Junior Open (in the fun event as he doesnt have a handicap) last year, through Get Golfing as he got free membership at Ansty. Was a really good day, so sure he'd fancy something like this

Beware, its addictive. Enjoy it though and as you get older and can’t play the stuff you used to its a great alternative.
Real shame Brandon Woods closed down, had some beautiful days down there and being next to the nature reserve you never knew what you might see.

I've been very lucky with my golf experiences.

I've been to the Open at Carnoustie and Royal Troon.
BMW Champs at Wentworth.
PGA Championship at Bethpage in NY.
Valspar Championships at Innesbrook in Tampa.

*and heading to the JCB Course for Liv Golf next weekend.

Played TPC Sawgrass x 2..
Played Copperhead at Innesbrook, Palm Harbor.
Played Isleworth in Windermere (near Orlando)
And played at and met Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin at the Concession Golf Course in Bradenton, FL.

My mate in the states is a Top 50 USGA Kids instructor and I've caddied for him in the U.S Open Qualifiers...

To say I'm obsessed with golf is an understatement.. 🤣

I miss Brandon Wood, great memories in 80s with passport to leisure a round was £2. Lovely setting.

I played it loads as a teenager. Lots of times with my dad and then when I got a bit older and we all passed our driving tests we'd go over there after school and play for a fiver (around 2006/7).

It then went badly downhill and was in very poor condition. A new green keeper joined and transformed it again, it was in the best condition ever. He then left to go to Edgbaston GC and then it shut down not long after. Real shame.

Inspired by The Open I went to the driving range yesterday, first time picking up a club in almost 18 months!

I was a pretty decent player before I stopped, so wasn't expecting to be terrible going back to it, but was pleasantly surprised at how well I was hitting it.

See if I get the bug back now 😁

I played my 12th round in six weeks today. You’d think I’d be improving (spoiler - I’m not 😂)

In fairness I’ve knocked four shots off from the first round to today. More importantly, 2-3 hours outdoors with phone on do not disturb and 15,000 steps does wonders.

I was playing fairly regularly at one point. I got my handicap down to about 14. Being consistent is my biggest downfall, I could quite easily par or better a few in a row then get a couple triple bogeys on the following ones. Few half decent courses round here that are still fairly affordable.

Lots of people feel like they need to make more pars or even birdies to improve their score. They don't, it's cutting out the double/triple bogeys that is the fastest way to improve your score.

Less penalty shots and less 3 putts (easier said than done I know!)

22nd round today. Finished 28 over par which is my best round yet and pulls the handicap down to 28.7. Dogshit yes but a marked improvement since I started in June.

Moreover it’s loads of time outdoors and provided I’m not held up by slow play it does wonders for the mind. The perfect escape from a houseful of arseholes hell bent on ruining my day (aka two teenagers).

The aim is to play a new course every week between now and the weather turning. 7 different courses so far. Today was Hollywood Golf Club. Played Ardencote last week. Looking at Windmill Village tomorrow or next weekend. And somewhere special for my 40th in September (possibly the Belfry, albeit only the peasant course). Golf Now is an absolute godsend.

22nd round since June?!! Nice 😅

The Belfry is overrated tbh and seems to be pot luck what condition it's in (though right now is the best it gets as they've just held the British masters this week).

If you are willing to go a little further up the M6 then Beau Desert is possibly the best course in the midlands. Sutton Coldfield and Little Aston also.

Kenilworth is very nice too for something more local

Yeah, must be averaging three games a week. It’s largely alone so not an all day job. Thanks for the recommendations I’ll have a look 🫡

Sorry I should have clarified, I think the Belfry is overrated personally. But of course it's totally subjective and plenty love it 🙂

I haven't been getting around many local courses recently, any you particularly like?

Also if you fancy a hidden gem, slightly further afield depending on where you live then Welford on Avon is nice. Mostly just because it's the quietest golf course I've ever played, no one seems to know about it and if you play in the week there's hardly anyone there! Strange setup though, there's no clubhouse just a car park 🤣

Hollywood was decent today. To be honest because of the weather it feels a bit unfair judging the courses I’ve played too harshly because the lack of rain means baron fairways. But otherwise I’m struggling to recommend anywhere I’ve played to someone who has no doubt played some of the better places.

Thanks for the recommendations. Probably going tomorrow and eyeing up Arden Country Club (Aylesford Course).

I started playing this year too , played 8 full rounds now and been hitting the par 3 course at the Warwickshire too.

Achieved by aim of the year last round to break 100 with a 95!

just playing boring golf is definitely the way to break 100 when your about 100-110 level.

This guy initially appears to be a 🤡 but videoreally made a massive difference to my scores!!

Nice one I’ll have a watch. And good progress. I think it was about the 17th round I broke 100, although have slipped back to around 100 a few times since.

Have you had a proper lesson? I’m torn somewhere between being happy with my self thought progress and not shelling out the money and worrying about bad habits being hard to shift the longer I go without some proper steer 🤔

Played yesterday and fairways here in Kent are like concrete so a few drives went well over 300yrds!
Played Windmill in Allesley a few weeks back for first time in 20years and was in good condition and good for starters as quite short.
Great way to spend a summers afternoon.
Ang par 3 courses in and around Cov?
