no, our aim is to finish in the top 6, 3 out of 5 seasons. Even if we get in the top 6, we've got an approx 20% chance of going up
We aren't aiming to finish in the top 6 for the sake of it ffs, there is an end game to that.
We have to compete with at least one of the 3 relegated teams to stand a chance of going up. Based on last season, Southampton were the weakest.
Huge brain move to strengthen them with our best player.

Its mental.

If we end up in the top 2 we aren't going to say our aim was the playoffs so we will drop out.

I'll be honest, I don't think the club will do this as I don't think they'd be so stupid.
If a Prem team comes in he'll be gone but it's perfectly acceptable to tell the player you aren't selling to a league rival and I think you'd have to have a low opinion of Rudoni to think he'd kick off about that.

Looks like we’ve priced rudoni and MVE out of moves, well done Doug
Good. If a team isn't meeting our valuation for a player then we shouldn't sell.

If a team is only willing to pay £6m for MVE or £15m for Rudoni, I'd genuinely rather take the punt on going up this year and keep them. Reminds me when Celtic wanted to pay us £375k for Westwood and (at the time) we believed we're competing for the playoffs...

you guys need a dose of reality.

We were 31 pts behind 2 parachute clubs last season (we were closer to relegation , 20 pts )

26 and 33 behind 2 the year before (+ Ipswich thrown in, like Birmingham could be this year) (14pts to relegation)

21 and 31 behind 2 parachutes the year before that (26 pts to relegation)

You try and get in the play-offs, and hope you luck out like Luton and Sunderland

How did Ipswich manage it?

Buzzing when Rudoni knocks us out the play offs but we can say we made a good profit.

I agree but if we finish 5th or 6th chances are we are going to have to play either a parachute team or a Birmingham.

In that case, let’s not strengthen them by selling them our best player especially so late that we don’t get to meaningful spend the profit to strengthen ourselves

We got more points than Sheff U after Xmas last season and including Lampard's tenure we were close to Sheff U, only 3-6 points behind. There is room to improve the squad but it's not as drastic as you say here. Both last season and 23/24 was mired by v slow starts.

Don't forget it only takes one season of fucking up the immediate return to suddenly get marooned here again. Sheffield United already look a shadow of what they were last season.
Should be aiming to pull teams back towards us rather than give them a leg up.

I don't buy the Blues nor Wrexham hype yet.

The idea we'll sell Rudoni to Southampton is not credible imo. They probably do want him but is it a move Rudoni will be desperate for? Probably not.

If Rudoni improves on last season's performance, a better Prem team will come in for him than Southampton (presuming they went up). So his best bet is to stick it out with us for one more year.

money and momentum
Our squad is one of the most expensive in the league, even with the money Blues and others have chucked about. 4 of those teams are parachute payment teams and Norwich who had built up a squad who attracted massive fees from their parachute payments/Prem days.

I think we should sell all our players so Doug can swim around in gold coins like Scrooge McDuck
Meanwhile at the CBS…

because we're not competing with them. We're competing with Norwich, WBA, Boro and the like.

You give yourself the best chance you can of finishing in the top 6 and then fingers crossed. If that means flogging Rudoni to a top 2 side, so you can reinvest, then so be it.

We will never get promoted with this mindset. We have to be competitive with 3rd/4th to win the PlayOffs. “Fingers crossed” it’s not a lottery. Generally the better teams win.

From Rudoni’s perspective the only real difference is money, it amounts to being in the same league this season either way. He will be in the top flight next season one way or the other, there is no strong footballing reason to insist on the move.
