Jimmy Hill, the man who virtually on his own transformed football. Abolition of the minimum wage, three points for a win, sponsorship on shirts, modern tv expert coverage, up-to-date music at grounds, broadcasts of matches to other venues. Jimmy is responsible for the modern game today for good or ill.
I struggle to think of innovation introduced by a Sunderland manager or any one associated with the club.

I wouldn't want a Sunderland manager to come in, dictate what colour we play in, what the club badge is, which song we sing or what our nickname is and then leave the club. You seem to be happy to go along with it all, fair enough.

Your badge has had several changes in my time supporting football. Many clubs' have, to be fair. ETA:: I quite liked the ship badge; it's the one I associate with Sunderland the most (perhaps bev=cause it was the one they used when I got into football).
Your nickname was decided seemingly by committee.
I don't think a manager can dictate what song fans sing. They either will or they won't.
Here are our historic kits; as you can see, it was a reversion to sky blue that took place in the 60s. Can't argue it wasn't an improvement. We've had some genuinely iconic kits.

Yes our badge has changed but not on the instructions of a manager.
The Black Cats nickname was voted for by the supporters.
I was only responding to the poster who said it was created recently, in reality it goes back a hundred years.
I like the ship badge, it was good to see it back on our shirts this season.
Your shirt history is interesting, so many changes over the years.

Yeah, no firm specification. Which means you get the scope for more creativity, but less of a set identity. I guess it's subjective which of those is preferable.

The history of being associated with a black cat may well go back a hundred years but even your own fans, historians, journalists etc. can't agree as to why.

talk about missing the point of a post hahahha Jimmy changed the whole ethos of the game (for the better, maybe ) but certainly modernised it. Nobody else has had such an impact on the game before or since.

In fact we had more than one, including Black Cats, which was most commonly used in the Sunderland area for decades.
We were also referred to as Mackems, which was more like slang, and Rokerites but left Roker Park in 1997 which brought about the vote.
Not agreeing the history, or origin of a nickname, is irrelevant .... Plymouth fans don't know why they're called Argyle if you ask them and West Brom don't know why they're called the Baggies. I doubt anyone calls them the Throstles unless you know better.

Jimmy Hill changed a lot about the game full stop, every club changes their badge at some point stupid point to make, our current badge has meaning behind every segment of it. We changed to sky blue originally in 1898-1922 due to the city producing high volumes of that coloured material. Jimmy later decided to play in Sky Blue in 1962 to solidify an identity to the club “the sky blues” for which 63 years now we have been the sky blues and worn sky blue. As about nicknames yours wasnt adopted until the 2000s

Assuming you mean for us, three sources on that. 1) is that is was taken to represent an underdog status at the club as it was coined when we joined the football league. 2) Clubs had nicknames and we didn’t since we moved away from our black kits (previously we were the blackbirds and 3) There apparently was a chicken farm near Highfield.

Not today no. Different times then. Jimmy Hill created a sky blue revolution. Football was still stuck in the 1950s when he took it by the scruff of the neck and transformed everything about it. Modernised everything about our club and everyone else followed.
Jimmy left because he was made an offer he couldn't refuse which will happen to your best players, as it will to ours.
No way anyone can make fans sing a song. We sing the sky blue song because it represented our rebirth as a club.
Sunderland have benefitted as much as anyone from the changes.
