On the subject of 'might have beens' .

In 1966, we heard JH was off to Bury to sign someone, and we all hoped / assumed that, it was Colin Bell (RIP recently). Instead, in search of goals Hill came back with Burnley reject and then playing for Bury, Ray Pointer. Pointer ran around like a headless chicken for the rest of the season and was then got rid of. Man City were top of the 2nd Division at the time.

And on the subject of mistakes, JH made plenty of blunders, as I'm sure Robins has (Vincenti, Kastaneer, that guy from Hull on loan two seasons ago, O'Brien...), which makes me slightly dispair when people declare their absolute 'trust' in Robins. Everybody makes mistakes - most on here think Sheaf and even Giles are mistakes. Fortunately for us, Robins mark 2 has made very few of them.
We were gazumped by Man City for Bell.
Pointer, England CF was class but past his best.
Still remember his goal when we won 1-0 at Wolves. I somehow accidently ended up in the North Bank, the end he scored.

Didnt we try and sign Panzo before he went to Nottingham Forrest?? Seem to recall it was another player we spent a long time chasing publicly and then once we got them, turned out not to be the best.

The play off final mistake still gives me nightmares despite it being chalked off

I remember collapsing to my seat in shock and pure anger and the relief when it was chalked off thought the luck was on our side and was our year

Also close to signing Trevor Francis before he moved to forest
We also went to look at David Platt when he was at Crewe, and bought Peter Billing instead!

And it was a toss up between buying Niall Quinn or Kevin Drinkell back in the day apparently.

Oh well, some you win, and some you lose

If we'd initially got him on a permanent it could have been very different I think.

There was obvious talent there but some huge deficiencies that needed coaching. I feel like we would have been the type of club to get the best from him but as a loanee it's never the same dynamic.

He was one of those that looked ok if he had Fadz telling him what to do through the game, but on his own, he was lost.

It was that Wrexham game when he was the central one of the three. I've never seen a player so confused by such rudamentary tactics.

"Good God, they're pumping it high into the box!! What wizardry is this?!?"

That should have ended all discussion on whether he should sign permanently once and for all (and in fairness, he only made the odd cameo afterwards).

I thought Panto was alright to be honest. Doyle kept him out of the team, and was clearly short of match practice by Wembley that season.

Oh no he wasn’t.
