If we had the chance to get Doyle for £8m I’d take their hand off. Has ability and a bit of nastiness about him and can play LB. The sort of quality we need to add to progress.
Norwich were apparently originally quoted £15million and that's why they arn't pursuing the transfer, (according to their forum)

That would also knock us out of the equation.

I wouldn't be suprised if he ends up at one of the promoted teams.

I hadn't heard that before. One of the most stupid things we've done in the market for years.
It depends.

If they were looking at someone to turn from loan to perm, then they may just have thought Doyle out of our means, which would be fair enough.

The strange thing is buying Binks when he didn't really do much during the loan.

I'm assuming he's referring to last summer which would mean the choice would be Doyle on a loan or Binks for a fee.

After having Binks for a year and seeing we never keep a clean sheet when he plays I'd have never paid money for him.

Ah, ok, but point still stands; that they didn't want to take a player on loan that there was no chance of getting permanently.

Binks was a weird signing however you want to look at it, though.

Tbf he played in the 1-0 home victory vs QPR back in February And had his best game that night.
I thought he'd kick on from that and become the player we thought we were getting, but alas it wasn't to be, and Kitching's form has kept him out since.

Fair, makes more sense then.

I think when you consider the context, Kitching arriving for big money and playing most of last season, the need to a left sided backup, a 22 year old who has fit in for under £2m is a reasonable shout IMO. He was never signed to be first choice. Doyle on loan would have pissed off your £4m CB for no long term benefit.

This is well reasoned. However, Robins started the season with Lati and Binks so it’s clear that at some point, Robins decided that the same players would swap role; starters to role places and vice versa. Truly a strange decision from Robins that probably played a part in him losing his job.

It’s all hypothetical, but it seems Robins just rated Binks that highly.

One thing on Binks, in Jan 2024 Saddles’ source said Binks would stay permanently if we extended the loan past Jan. I struggle to believe that Robins had direct ‘this or that’ choice between Binks and Doyle in the summer.

More likely, we’d all but signed the deal and Doyle may have been available and interested in joining. IIRC, Binks was our first signing of the summer.

Just thinking of the Sunderland 1st goal in the first game, our full backs push up, need a quick centre half to cover ? Thomas and kitching have got caught out a few times
Don't get me wrong, pace in the back 2 would be great.
But Milan does a lot of clearing up, if we had a left back who could do the same we'd be a lot more secure.

The flaw in this logic was that the £4m CB was in the bomb squad until December

He was part of that winning run probably around Feb wasn't he, clean sheets as well, proper football?

I can't see the point in another left sided central defender for the sort of money Doyle is being touted for.

Frankly if Bidwell stays he could easily play backup left sided central defender, allowing Binks to leave for a fee.

It is the right hand side of the team that needs strengthening mostly.

Massive fan of Doyle, but just don’t see finance stacking up to make priority. He has himself said he needs a perm move, but imagine city will command hefty fee and also imagine his wage demands would be large.

we’ve just got bigger needs, imagine a relegated club will probably go and hoover him up.

If you think £8m is a lot for a player like I believe you are mistaken. He could genuinely be an international player in 3-4 years. We concede a lot of poor goals which has cost us huge amounts of points. We must prioritise investing in our defence.

You want one of our backup centre halves to be Bidwell?
