even if we don’t gift them the 2nd goal and we were going there 1-1 it‘ll still be the same game , they’ll just defend again, we just need to do the same again, eveyone saying how well they defended ? They were awful for our goal, totally switched off, and they will again, we just need to be a bit better with balls into the box, bit More quality and we’ll be fine, they’ll be that worried about picking up rudoni on crosses somebody else will score, it’ll be some effort but why not

In truth mate, I'm not quite as confident as you, either in our ability to break them down if we play the same way, or that we won't concede again on the counter. But I sincerely hope you're right and I'm wrong, that would make all of us very happy. 🙂

I'm going to be boring here.... I know it will feel like we need to throw everything at it from the off but I can see Lampard being very calm over this... I think he will set up the same, potentially bringing Wright centrally and EMC on left (for as long as he can remain on the pitch). Sunderland have nothing to do and know they can sit as they did at the CBS, would be shocked if they tried to press us... Stats wise, we kept hold of the ball nicely 75% to their 25%, had an XG of 1.52 to their 1.46 (and that's with the giveaway goal at the end). It seems like panic stations for us fans but reality is it will be a case of speeding up the passing in final 3rd - a touch more direct and focusing on Saka and EMC - we actually made a lot of really good runs in behind their defence (Rudi especially) and the balls weren't played in. If we get to 70th minute still down then yeh okay I'd expect to see us bundling on strikers but I'm feeling very optimistic about us getting a result tomorrow night.

Rudoni's goal was almost identical xG to Mayenda's (0.48 vs 0.50) & was the only Big Chance we had.

As much possession & control as we had, we created almost nothing. They did an absolute number on us, forcing us wide & then our only gameplan seemed to be to toss the ball into the box which, given we had left out our only target man striker, they absolutely lapped up.

Didn’t we score from a ball “tossed into the box”?

As for our “target man striker” there’s more chance of Da Silva attacking a ball than him

We put one decent cross in yes. What about the other 32?

I agree Simms isn't the best at attacking crosses but what we have seen quite a bit of under Lampard is he occupies defenders allowing others (usually Rudoni) more space to attack it.

It just seems mad that we would choose to play that way with that personnel. More likely is we were forced into it by Sunderland's approach but didn't adjust like we should have done.

Me too. I want to go to Wembley again. It’s so close again. I think we need to silence the crowd with a couple of goals in the first 10 minutes🤪. I wonder if SUFC fans are feeling confident. I wouldn’t is I were them.

Could the promoted team come from this game?

I can't stand either of them and if a Sunderland v Sheff U final was being played in my back garden I would shut the curtains

But if it comes to it get Sheff U out the League, I would feel pig sick if Sheffield United got to Wembley and completely flopped/have an off day/didn't show up knowing it could have been us playing them - If we go out tomorrow I hope Sheffield United have a day where they are completely unplayable and they would have beaten anybody

It's also one less parachute payments side to compete with next season and would be funny watching them get pummeled every week, Sour Chops Wilder blaming everyone but himself before he is sacked at Xmas
Right, so you are throwing your phone out of the window and will have your curtains shut. 🤔

This is all, very, very helpful.

i cannot shake the thought that its going to be 0-0 for 90mins, and we'll score a insanely late goal to take it to ET. money ofcourse is on Rudi.

Then sunderland will lose there nerve and we'll win in ET
Are you noted for accurate precognition. 🤔

The reality is Rudoni has improved hugely under Lampard and his goalscoring alone has masked the obvious cracks in the squad.

Thomas looks more likely to score than Simms - we’ve blown around £8 million at least on simms BTA and Bassette

Wright is capable but isnt doing it.

Score early and they will be shitting their pants, we need everyone to be on it from the start and give them nothing, i don't see Sunderland sitting back and defending so we must be at them, if they score first then i think its over as we need two already, just my opinion of course, we can do this but would need abit of luck as well.

The cracks in the team are at the back. This team has had little problem scoring goals at a consistent rate this season, especially under Lampard.

I’m confident we’ll win the tie, two fortunate goals doesn’t change anything for me.

They’ll try and replicate the 1st leg and it’ll backfire because their fans will get on their back. The alternative works for me, they come at us and we have more space to operate in.

Lampard’s Derby pulled off a 4-2 win at Elland Road to win the tie despite losing at home. The players seem relaxed and Matty Grimes post-match seemed fired up.

Sunderland won’t be so lucky tomorrow imo.

If MVE doesn’t do two pretty significant mistakes, we probably nick a win or be taking a draw to SoL.

All too often this season we’ve been on hand to hand teams easy chances. That’s the weak underbelly.

Looking at how we play, Lampard will be looking to add an athletic CB to this group, perhaps 2 if Lati and Binks go.

Thomas and Kitching, in fairness, have largely been solid under Lampard and have cut out a lot of the mistakes made under MR.

It's mental looking back at that Derby v Leeds second leg. Lampard made substitutions before half time. Could you ever imagine doing that for us!?

What a way to win the game 😂 the melt down on their part will be fucking epic, however for the old ticker a 2 nill win will do 😂

It’s got a bobby Thomas late winner all over this
I want a EMC pass to Grimes who'll swing in a cross, Hadji contests for it and knocks it down to Bobby, Bobby controls it with his chest then smashes it bottom corner Stoke City-esque in front of their fans! their supporters in disbelief, kids crying, Sunderland players on their knees losing their minds and the Sky Blue Army singing loud and proud

That’s exactly how it will happen. wright will give them a bit more to think about on crosses than assante. rudoni 1st goal Thomas the winner 😉👍
