Electrical Issue (6 Viewers)

Where I live there is one big power cable coming in, this is then split into 4 to supply 4 meters and 4 apartments with various fuses etc.

I have been trying to get a smart meter to come off PAYG got well over a year but British Gas won't change meters (had them out twice and they look at it and straight up refuse) because of the wiring and cables before the meter. (Also some loose junction-type boxes). British Gas reported it to Western Power too.

I have spoken to the Landlord of the communal area who I pay a small ground rent to, they said it would need to be Western Power. Each apartment has it's own meter and feed registered with the Electric companies.

I have been onto Western Power who are also saying it isn't down to them but they will kindly tidy the cabling up for hundreds of pounds. They are refusing to look at it unless I pay them loads.



I think it just needs the power going off, tidy up those cables and attach the boxes to the wall. I don't fancy doing it in case I get a bit of a shock....

Anybody got any advice?

I think I’m right in saying any NICEIC or ECA registered electrician is allowed to work on it and certify it. I don’t think you have to use Western power once in the building and Western Power almost certainly will charge you a premium for using them. Just google NIC electricians in your area and give a couple of them a call, see what they say. I would also have thought it’s the freeholders responsibility not the leaseholders of the flats as it’s in a communal area.

I've checked with a couple of ECA ones and they wouldn't touch stuff from before the meter.

I am close to just throwing some water on it to be fair.

In this case. Western Power (The DNO( District Network Operator) are only responsible for (upto and including) the big green metal box at the back of the picture. Any wiring between there and the hopefully 4 fuses for separate flats is the responsibility of BNO (Business Network Operator) which is essentially the owner of the building. Anything after the fuse up to the meter is your suppliers responsibility and anything after the meter is Property owner and or landlords.
It could probably be sorted fairly easily by a decent Meter fitter. But would involve cooperation from the other flats to power them all down and would take a few hours. But I imagine all the flats have different suppliers which causes further problems.

British gas left paper work which basically said they just need those boxes fixing to the board so I assume it's a tidy up of the cables?

Would probably be ok to power down for a couple of hours if I let them know in advance.

It's just finding somebody to do it as everybody is passing it onto everybody else. Western power have now said they can pull the fuse for £100 so I then just need somebody to tidy all the cables up.

It's still going to be pricey.
