Burnley away because of the nightmare it was. We laugh about it now every road trip we take.

Arrived late due to traffic. Headed for a car park signed “stadium parking” and it ended up being for the cricket ground. Cut across the cricket field to save some time and then had to climb a wire fence. My brother (pissed) got caught on the top of the fence and fell into a pile of compost or something on the other side, catching his jeans and ripping them on the wire.

Covered in shit and with half his trouser leg missing, we ran into the ground to our (wooden) seats as Stephen Hughes was shown a red card. Proceeded to get pumped 4-0 or 4-1 iirc and left before the end. Flat tyre on the way back so had to put the spare on at the services with what can only be described as a Meccano car Jack.

Was a good trip.

I remember that game. Travelled up via car and had to divert round Manchester because of horrific M6 traffic. Ended up in Accrington at lunchtime, unable to find anywhere to get anything to eat.

Arrived in Burnley and went to a pub in the backstreets of that estate opposite the ground.... walked through the doors just as a group of Cov fans were being ejected for being mouthy, so we weren't made very welcome.

Obviously the game was shocking, we left in about the 89th minute (the one and only time i've ever left a game early), hearing two more roars as we walked back to the car... we didn't need to check the results to know that Burney had scored a 3rd and 4th.

Also it was pissing down.... Game ranks in the top three miserable away trips.... along with the two below....

The two most shocking away trips for me were both around mid-2000's when we were in the championship.

Gillingham away under Peter Reid. It was between xmas and new year, and was absolutely freezing.... i travelled down with a mate who had only just passed his driving test, so the 4 hours each way were not without their nail-biting moments. Admittedly enjoyed the pub on the roundabout, but everything else was awful. Performance was abject.... anyone moaning about anything in the last couple of seasons really doesn't know they're born. 3-1 defeat on the converted scaffold stand, wind blowing in off the sea. The vitriol towards Peter Reid at the end from the fans really stuck with me, and was probably the most hostile i've ever seen city fans towards "one of their own"

Possibly a year or two later was Blackpool away, last weekend before xmas. Travelled up on friday night rush hour, and stayed at a b&b with allegedly a sea-view from every room (our room didn't even have a window). There were plenty of Cov fans around, so ended up getting smashed until about 3am.

Woke up massively hungover and straight down to Yates's for 11am.... thankfully was pretty hammered by the time the game started, in which we were 1 or 2 down after 10mins, and a player down, with Kevin Kyle sent off early. Goes without saying it was freezing and we were on the scaffold stand. Ended up losing 4-0 i think. Straight back out afterwards. The next morning i was in such an awful state i was unable to drive home and had to let my brother drive.

There are some great stories to be told by the downtrodden Sky Blue Fans & not forgetting the funny occasions that they have encountered in there search for utopia in a Coventry City life.......somebody needs to write a book with all the tales that they could tell us supporting Coventry City

I'm not 100% sure but I think it's still the same stand but with a roof on top of it now! Dowie said after it was a fully committed performance and he couldn't ask for any more from his players. That summed up his time with us bar the odd blip (West Brom, Stoke, United and Blackburn away). We also stayed up there for the weekend and I said then I'd never do it again. I know some nice lads from up there and always found the residents to be great people but it's one of my least favourite places to visit!

I go back years Peterborough away 1964 thousands of Cov there, we lost, the two Wolves matches at Molineux in the 60s winning them both against the odds again thousands there Blackburn away where victory almost confirmed promotion to the first division. but the one always in my memory bank was our semi-final victory v Leeds, the occasion, winning and the realisation that we little Cov were off to Wembley, strange coming out of the Kop Hillsborough with 27000 Cov how quiet it was it seemed everyone seemed subdued in a bit of a trance then the amazing trip back down the M1 & M69 being met by hordes of cheering public, just a one off never to be repeated Sky Blue experience.

Just checked and I'm on 35 now, 5 of those not with City though. The weird one for me is having been to Salford's ground 17 times because I used to live round the corner and would stroll up if I had nothing else to do. Also got to see Italy v Argentina play a friendly at the Etihad living up here, only £11 a ticket.

I was also trying to work out how many home games and away games in total. Saw first at aged 7, now 50 and had first season ticket the year before the cup final. Had a few seasons in my late 20s where I fell out of love a bit and didn't go all the time and then missed the season at Northampton and Covid. I reckon therefor approx 30 years season ticket (19, 21 & 23 games) is 600 odd, some years odd games and then aways I must be really close to 1000 but need an Excel spreadsheet and a season by season guide I think to work it out!

Impressive record keeping. Although I can remember all of the grounds I've visited, because I've been to some quite a lot (and over a few years) I can't recall all of the results. Wish I'd logged them all now (although I have tried to 'mark' as many of the older games in a City book (Jim Brown?) which list results and teams/players going back decades.

Think that was the game where the trouble made the nationals and a load of City got nicked retrospectively. I knew one lad from Cov, who rarely went iirc, but got collared (not even a troublemaker in my dealings with him).

Yeah it was organised that day. Few coach loads of Cov lads. Trouble in the ground too. We had a bit of a reputation back then.

Of the current league teams, I'm at 88/92. Missing, Barrow / Salford / Harrogate / Bournemouth.
Bournemouth still a sore point, not getting a ticket last season.
Overall i've done 136 stadiums watching either Cov or England. Don't follow England away anymore though.

I would be interested about penning a book full of away day tales. We could do with some cheering up.

Think mine is 18, which is a bit pathetic seen as I do go away multiple times a season. Most of those I've been to multiple times and tend to be local to me. Surprised myself how many of the grounds local to me I haven't done yet due to bad timing of away games against those teams.

Swansea, Wigan and Leeds (obviously not with us) took me to 67 this season. Lost Rochdale, but gained Notts County so remain at 67 for next season. Got a handful I haven't done in the PL if we were to go up, if not, Huddersfield, Plymouth and hopefully Wednesday will be 3 to tick off.

I had 63 but looking again mostly at the old stadia it’s more old long time gone grounds like Eastville, Bristol Rovers, Trowbridge, Trakia Plovdiv not sure if they exist anymore, yet strangely never been to any of the big three North East clubs but been to Darlington and Hartlepool.
Hull’s Boothferry Crescent which had a station inside the ground.

Worst away ground was at Wimbledon three or four years ago they were playing at some non league ground, despite being at the front, on the half way line could hardly see a thing, in front on the touch line was two see through dug outs with subs and staff sat in so you couldn’t see through, both lots of managers & coaches stood either side on the line, the linesman, the fourth official, two stewards either side the dug outs all in a line various subs running up and down most the time & a couple of cops our bit was packed so you couldn’t move up or sideways game ended 0-0 about the only good thing about it.
