THORN LOOKS TO GET JENNINGS ON BOARD AT THE RICOH
COVENTRY City launch their season this week with tomorrow's Capital One Cup tie at Dagenham & Redbridge setting the stage for their League One opener at Yeovil on Saturday.

And although Andy Thorn is satisfied that he has assembled a competitive squad and the Sky Blues' preparation is bang on schedule, he is hoping to find the scope for a spot of fine tuning over the next few days.
He saw enough in Steven Jennings's two 45-minute stints at Port Vale and Bristol Rovers to decide that the Liverpudlian midfielder would prove a valuable asset, and he wants another look at Peter Poloskei before deciding whether the Hungarian striker is worth a contract.
“I think Steven has proven his quality,“ said Thorn. “It's taken a lot longer than we thought because of the knock he picked up but I'm sure he could do a good job for us so I hope that something can be sorted out. “It's a bit too early to say about Peter because he didn't really get much of a chance to show us what he's got to offer but we've got a development squad game coming up this week so we'll have another look before we make up our minds.“
City won 2-1 at Bristol Rovers at the weekend their third consecutive away victory against League Two opposition and Thorn declared: “It was a really good exercise for us, a proper, hard-fought game, and just what we wanted for our last pre-season friendly. We played well and scored two terrific goals, and while we were all disappointed with the one we conceded, that's a situation that we can address in training.“
Thorn is particularly delighted that Cody McDonald's Sky Blues career looks set to take off after his stylish double at the Memorial Ground made it four goals in just over two hours of football.
“We've never seen the best of Cody because he hasn't done a pre-season for the past two years,“ said Thorn, “but he will score a lot of goals for us. He was quick and sharp and he showed that when we put a good move together we've got somebody in the middle who can finish it off.“
The striker agreed: “It's more about getting gametime under your belt but it's always nice to get a couple of goals and I felt really good out there I'm fit and raring to go.
“I got great service from chris Hussey and Gary McSheffrey for the two goals and I enjoyed playing with callum Ball because he's great at holding the ball up and creating a bit of space.
“We've got plenty of quality here and with the new arrivals we've got a lot of height in the side now which is very important in this league.“
Thorn didn't attempt to conceal his annoyance that newly-arrived midfielder adam Barton, who turned in an impressive 45-minute stint against Rovers, will miss tomorrow's cup trip because he has been called up by the Republic of Ireland Under-21s.
“Some bright spark decided he's fit for international football when he hasn't played a game for six months which is absolutely incredible,“ said the city boss. “lee carsley put in a phone call because we thought his connections might count for something but apparently it's crucial for adam to be sitting on a bench instead of working with us.“

Great news. Although I can't help but wonder that if he wanted more time to look at Polo, it seems playing him for longer in the games would have been a starting point.

Great news about Jennings if we can agree on terms.

If we would have played Peter 90 mins each game and found him not to be good enough the rest of our strikers wouldn't have got match time and we wouldn't know which to play.

Cody, Ball, Elliott etc are DEFINITELY here for the season so it is more important to get them up to match fitness, than to give Peter Polski 90 minutes.

Good news about Jennings though, even though I was expecting it!

Agreed, he's stuck between looking at a player and fine tuning his teams style of play and sharpness. It just worries me that he's not yet convinced so guess he may well let go if this one too. Think this lad really Needs to shine in the last friendly.

Wat if polo isn't good enough? Thorn obviously wants another stricker. Any ideas on wat his contingency plan may be?

Really hope he puts in a good performance because I think he could be a useful player. He should get more time in this one as lot of first teamers will be rested for cup game and Saturdays opener.

He's a free agent, was at Motherwell last year but is presently unattached. Defensive midfielder. A good one, hopefully..

Jennings will be a real pit bull, not like that dickhead Deegan.

10 times better.

From what my son says he is solid in the tackle, reads the game well and is good at picking out a pass to split a defence. Don't expect him in the final 3rd very often though.

He looked decent from what I seen of him on Saturday. Slow start but always looks for the ball. Hopefully he and Fleck can add something we've been missing for a while! Can't be any worse than the Doyle / Hughes partnership we persisted with for so long :)

Isn't it usually 12? Although I thought it was 12 on the previous day.

I think that's for a 3pm kick off - 12pm the previous day.

So for Jennings to play tonight he would need to have signed by 4.45pm yesterday.

Although I could well be wrong on that.

Are trialists not free to play for who they want? I am sure we have had some trialists playing in competitive games beforehand

Was he maybe on a short-term contract? I think a player has to be registered, but there's nothing about how long the contract is. I remember the guy too, El Drissi or similar.

I'm worried it's taking so long to sort out. Clearly a gap between them

Try and remember we don't have exclusive access to his agent. His representative, Jonathon Hope, represents players such as Karim Benzema and is building a boxing interest too. As such, I guess we have to wait our turn between his calls to Mancini, Ferguson, Wenger et al before he turns his gaze toward an under-achieving third division club and an ex-Motherwell midfielder...

Surely it wouldn't be a very good agent if he was delaying his client getting a job?

But he probably represents 50 players or more; and he'll apportion his time accordingly. Jennings has obviously been part of that priority list, hence the use of terminology 'ongoing', but he's not going to be the priority; with no transfer fee and a circa. £4K weekly wage, is he?
