Why were there three charges against the officer and at different 'levels' so to speak?

Second degree murder
Third degree murder
Manslaughter

I know the laws in the US are different but would've thought it would only be one of the above charges?

Not surprised personally. Whatever you thought of Floyd, a policeman shouldn't behave like that, ever.

Sentencing in 8 weeks time, I just hope the loonies smashing up cities don't do it again. Police reform in the states also needed on the back of this.

Let's be honest, you're right about reform, but their gun laws have needed reform for decades and they've done nothing about them, its not going to happen.

I’m afraid it’s unlikely this won’t be overturned at some point
Normally I'd agree, but this is so high profile and the reactions it would cause I'd be very surprised if they allowed that to happen. Clearly guilty from the off and the verdict is the correct one, but a pointless waste of money on a trial that was never going any other way.

Look I would put a million pounds on the fact that the Cnut took a great deal of pleasure in what he did and didn’t care whether a black man lived or died. However I think what you’ve said there may be his saving grace that the argument will be the outside influences. Also they may well compare it to other killings by cops and compare outcomes

Hmmmm yes, maybe Chauvin could take these arguments and hire a lawyer, and the lawyer could spend several weeks arguing them to a jury. You could put it on TV!

I doubt he will ever be out with those charges will he?

Wonder if he will get looked after inside or thrown in with everybody else?

It’s almost as if there has been never been a retrial where exactly the same points and arguments have led to a different outcome

If you want to depress yourself, the Daily Mail comments on the article relating to this verdict are a awful read. Worse than twitter.

Are you sure about that? There can be a retrial using "exactly" the same evidence if you can prove some kind of irregularity, misconduct or error with the first trial. So in your legal opinion, what was the problem with this case?

Some states have double jeopardy don’t they or does that only work one way? Ie a not guilty verdict?

The prosecutors were keen to have third degree as essentially a fall back if they didn't get a second degree conviction but I wasn't aware you could be convicted of both.

🙄🤷🏼‍♂️🤦‍♂️
One of the other truly depressing things about the case is how the racism in some people is so deeply embedded they can't even see it.
'You can't say anything these days without being called racist'
'I tell it like it is'
'I'm just saying what everyone's thinking'
'He was a criminal'
'He shouldn't have resisted arrest'
It makes me despair.

"Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned." according to Judge Cahill so there's every chance this depressing tale is not over and done with yet.

Cahill was referring to comments Maxine Waters (Californian Congresswoman) made over the weekend that some may have taken as a threat of riots if Chauvin was not found guilty.

"but I don't think it's prejudiced us with additional material that would prejudice this jury," he said, adding that "a congresswoman's opinion really doesn't matter a whole lot."

It's over, other legal experts have stated that the defence would need to prove that any comments would of swayed the jury which based on the evidence is highly unlikely.

Hadn't heard about this till now

One of the problems with the police in America is the length of training which totals around 21 weeks , and obviously what goes in them 21 weeks doesn't help them relate to the public

They need to do something because I've seen multiple videos of people (I should add black , white , Latino, Asian) where the police are completely unreasonable and there is absolutely zero cooperation to be had .. they are often creating the situation which then leads to deaths .

It's a bizarre way of operating .

If I was him I wouldn't have reached for my seat belt either to be fair

America definitely has a problem in regards to the police
A restructure is required , but one of the problems that will always remain is the amount of guns available to the general public , and this is one of the things that go hand in hand with bad policing .

Nervous , agitated cops with no people skills , nervous agitated members of the public = recipe for disaster
