SKY BLUES MOVE QUICK AFTER £1M KEOGH DEAL

COVENTRY City are set to strengthen their squad with a talented young centre-half from Manchester United as star defender Richard Keogh finally sealed his move away from the Ricoh Arena.
Although disappointed to be losing the 25-year-old fans' favourite * who has joined Derby for an undisclosed fee understood to eventually be worth in excess of £1million * Sky Blues boss Andy Thorn has acted swiftly to draft in another highly rated player on a season-long loan from Old Trafford.

It is expected that the powerful England youth international, who can play in a number of positions including centreback, full-back and central midfield, will complete the paperwork today and report for duty at Ryton on Monday on City's return from their preseason tour in Scotland.

Meanwhile, Thorn has worked the Keogh move to his advantage by securing promising young centre-forward Callum Ball on a long-term loan, although the two deals are separate.

The 6ft 3ins tall striker * who scored against City at Pride Park last season * is understood to be the first of up to two more players coming in in that position.

“We've done our homework on Callum who is strong and powerful, and got loads of potential,“ said Thorn of the 19-year-old.

“We're looking for strikers and I'm confident he'll score goals for us, especially the way we play.

“It's a position we are looking to address but we are not finished there. There will be a couple more coming in but at the same time we are well within the budget.“

Keogh, meanwhile, who has also been courted by Cardiff and Leeds, agreed personal terms and completed a medical with the Rams yesterday before putting pen to paper on a three-year deal.

Although Cardiff had looked favourites to get him, County are understood to have offered the player of the season more money money resulting in the Welsh club cooling their interest to avoid being drawn into a bidding war.

He is the third centre-back to leave Coventry this summer and Richard Wood (pictured) could be the fourth after the 27-year-old was strongly linked with a move back to newly promoted Sheffield Wednesday.

Wood is understood to be City's highest earner and his return to Hillsborough would clearly help balance the books now that the club are in League One.

The left-sided defender slipped down the pecking order last season under Andy Thorn, managing just 12 Championship starts before being out injured from February until the end of the season.

Wood was signed by Chris Coleman and has a year left on his current contract which means Coventry should get a fee for the centre-back who played against Ross County on Wednesday night but who could be left out against Inverness Caledonian Thistle tomorrow if the Owls make their move for the player who came up through the South Yorkshire club's Academy.

Another player I wouldn't be dissapointed if he left, as long as we find a replacement.

wood is on 6k a week, i am guessing 2 players on 3k a week would be better for the squad than 1 on 6??? Its a strange one Wood always looked the part but never really cemented his place in the 1st team. Although Thorn told Coleman he was the best centre back in the Championship back in 2008.

Again not too worried if he leaves we are building upwards in my eyes moving players on who havent really done it for us isnt a bad thing even though i do like him as a player

A few contenders for the loan player having looked at their reserves list... Reece Brown or Tom Thorpe would appear to be the favourites.

More importantly, when's your moaning going to stop?

This is getting rediculous now. When is the actual squad strengthening going to start?

We haven't. The two French blokes are ready made replacements. Wood is earning too much to be a bit part player.

Wood out? Surely not! Can't replace senior pros with youngsters on loan.

Where does this story come from? It's not on Newsnow and they usually have every City story going.

Quit your fucking moaning and accept it. The best we can do is build a team for promotion. Wood was a backup an probably already 3rd choice behind the frenchies so best to let him go and free up the wages.

Cameron and Willis are more than good enough to step in as it looks like the 2 french lads are the starting CB, we also dont know what the young UTD kid is about.

Last season the wages were not distributed evenly around the squad and the team performances suffered as there was no strength in depth. The likes of Eastwood, Clingan, Bell etc didn't put in a shift that matched their superior wages when compared to others in the squad. This forum has asked for the 'deadwood' to be cleared out and for Thorn to be given a chance to wheel and deal in the market. He has experience of scouting 'good players' for us previously so lets see what happens before we dismiss our chances. The squad certainly feels to have more of a better all round feel to it with cover for more positions and more options from the bench.

Remember we are no longer a championship club so cannot pay championship wages, however still have players that could hold their own in the championship so should be able to compete.

Wood, Bell, and O'donovan are players that will be bit part or not play at all so with them collectivly on 12 grand a week i would prefer to use that somewhere else. And as we have covered all those positions 2 more attacking players who would make the first team automatically would make us a strong squad.

Or we still going to cry over keogh and Craine,, move on look forward and hope we have a good season no expectation just enjoy watching some young players develope and make us a stronger club..

I think Cameron over the following year has the potential to be better than Wood.
He's much stronger and probably quicker. He could do well in league 1.

I don't agree. We've let go more than we've brought in,we've got even less depth than last seadon. Look how that turned out.

Mind you torchy, maybe its a good thing if they get rid of last seasons squad, seeing as half of em couldn't be arsed.

We loose players everyone moans, we bring in players everyone thinks they will do rubbish, if wood goes is it really a big loss? I'm sorry but he isn't , bring in young fresh talent who need and want to prove themselves, our two new French guys I think will be best CB in the league, I'm looking forward to seeing new faces in at city , to see how we play, I'm looking forward to the season and despite relegation I'm always feeling positive for my club, we can't slate anything about the team because we haven't seen them play a league match yet, friendly's are for fitness and obviously winning is nice but its all about the 18th of August we can start judging the squad and management then

That's what people have been calling out for. Personally, it looks to me like we have more cover in every position, the youth from last year have a years experience while we also have Kilbane, McSheffrey and Elliott for a bit of experience in the dressing room and on the pitch. It looks like a more harmonised squad to me. We need another CM (hopefully Jennings who has a bag load of L1 experience too) and a FW/Wide player.

EDIT: And Wood, currently, for experience!

New isn't always better, but what we had last season was so poor I'm happy to have new players in.

Our 2 new French blokes who we know nothing about will be the best in the league? And people have the nerve to call city fans pessimistic!

Yes, we more than likely would have stayed up if we had strengthened.
Although we are losing some 'big name' players, they are mainly players who haven't delivered. I'm pleased we are letting them go and getting fresh faces in.

That being said, if we had stayed up most of them wouldn't be leaving. Both through their willingness to play in the championship rather than league one, and no doubt because Sisu wouldn't be slashing the wage bill quite as vigorously.

One good aspect of getting rid of lots of our players is that their losing mentalities can piss off with them!
