The defense department is currently led by acting secretary Christopher Miller, who was appointed in November, after Donald Trump abruptly fired Mark Esper.

Peaceful protesters outside the Capital Buildings were dispersed with tear gas not long back so Trump could stage a photo op.
This picture was taken a couple of miles from the Capital Buildings, at the other end of Union Square, during the BLM protests.
The difference to what we have seen today is pretty stark.

Seems that Trump is Commander in Chief of the DC National Guard so the Virginia National Guard has had to be activated instead as that's outside of his control. Seems to have done the trick as the DC National Guard has now been activated.
Media also reporting Trump is watching this on TV from the White House and refusing requests to issue a strong condemnation of the actions.
He has the opportunity to make a joint address with Biden to stop this nonsense. But that means acknowledging defeat which he will obviously never do.
Maryland also sending in state troopers and their own national guard.
