Festive fixture memories (1 Viewer)

I was lying in bed this morning thinking about City games from down the years between Christmas and New Year (I have a 4 month old baby so I don't sleep anymore).

Ones that immediately came to mind were the Boxing Day 3-2 win against Arsenal (definitely in my top 5 favourite games) and the 3-2 against Man Utd.

But, as I started looking into some of the games I realised how jumbled some of my memories are. I had a memory of beating Spurs 4-0 one New Years Eve. Turned out they beat us 4-0. We beat them 4-0 earlier in December another year. I was sure one year we beat Bolton 5-1 on Boxing Day - turns out it was 31 Jan! Other memories which may or may not get correct include a ref blowing the whistle early on a New Years Day game (a 0-0 with Southampton?) And then blaming it on the new watch he got for Christmas.

For me it was a freezing, foggy Boxing Day in early 90’s with me old grandad when we walloped Villa 3-0, Quinn with 2 and Rosario with other if I remember correctly.
Happy days.

but away win at Everton ran it close

not just the score but took a young disabled lad an Everton fan - had prearranged parking and Police had it all in hand we were only 50 yards from gate. inside players came and chatted presented him with a shirt. shame about the result I lie - but i was v happy

even watching from the home end

As a kid - Spurs 2-2 (my old man spent most of it in the bar!)

Always a family day out for us - oh yeah - 1-0 v Middlesbrough

Yes I remember that year well, a 6-0 thumping of Man U, 4-0 against Liverpool and then 8-0 against Villa. Especially good was the 25 game unbeaten run with 20 wins and then winning the league and European cup - or was I just dreaming? .

Boxing Day. Elland Rd. 1-0 down, finished 3-1 to us. Huckerby was absolutely unplayable that day - one of the greatest performances I have ever seen in a Coventry shirt. Fans truly fantastic as well - as soon as we went 1-0 down we turned the volume up and outsang the home faithful.

Boxing day. Coventry 5-4 Norwich, and Jim Blyth being chaired off the pitch after saving a last minute penalty to prevent it finishing 5-5.

Im surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet but the best festive game I have seen was the 5-4 win against Norwich. It was a fantastic match from start to finish. We were 2-0 up after about 15 minutes, the second goal being a wonderful Ian Wallace overhead kick. Norwich however came back to lead 3-2 by half time. The second half saw us score two more to lead 4-3. One of these was a Bobby McDonald goal where he somehow bent the ball around and inside the post from a starting position on the goal line level with the six yard box. Norwich equalised again, 4-4 only for us to take the lead again (was it Gaydon or Gooding got the 5th?) In the very last minute Norwich were awarded a disputed penalty, their second and I think, the third of the game. Well, Jim Blyth brought the house down when he dived and saved Ryan's penalty. A great game, typical of many that season.

My first ever away game I think, Gary Mac scored a pen, he was getting absolute pelters from the Leeds fans. Who I was sat amongst. One of the Tabloids had a photo of Gary Mac tucking the pen away which I was right behind. You could see my face lighting up as the home fans were all kicking off. I was only 12/13 at the time though so I kept my celebrations in check.

I think the Wolves game where Westie saved the pen from Ebanks-Blake was boxing day wasn't it? One of my top Ricoh moments.

Turns out it was Feb. Just felt like Xmas!

Remember queueing outside the HR ticket office in the freezing cold the day before we played Middlesbrough in the 90s, the queue was so big club staff brought out hot chocolate for everyone. No idea what the eventual match was like but that was always a nice memory

Was that the game where I helped dig snow off the pitch/surrounding area to ensure the game went ahead. Joe Elliott handed out free tickets to those who helped - and we then lost the game......gggrrr !!

The 5-4 Norwich game has to be the stand out match as it had everything, one of the most exciting games I've seen and never to be forgotten. Another that comes to mind that sticks in the memory was us against Liverpool Boxing Day 1967/68 season, and they were riding high in the division as usual,while we were at the bottom. I was a young kid stood on the Spion Kop with my dad and uncle looking out onto a snow covered pitch. Huge attendance around 40,000 and it ended 1-1. Their team was full of stars such as Hunt,Smith,Callaghan,Thompson, and the fiery Ian St John. He was closely marked by our tough tackling Brian Lewis who was roughing St John up and it obviously annoyed him as he ended up knocking out Lewis,with an uppercut that sparked Lewis out for several minutes. The Scot walked off to loud boos and jeers,but my dad who loved his boxing said what a cracking punch ! Don't think Brian Lewis shared my dad's enthusiasm !

We won the Boro game 3-0. The Norwich game was special for me because of the Wallace overhead kick which remains my Favorite goal and the Blyth penalty save.
The Liverpool game in 67 was freezing cold and I was on the kop as well,which was populated with a group of Liverpool fans under the scoreboard, they were very friendly and full of seasons cheer.
The Boxing Day massacre in 92 was possibly the best atmosphere I remember at HR and the Spurs game in 96 showed we could could go toe to toe with the best and come out on top.
The Man United and Arsenal games before we were relegated were the feast before being fed shit for the past 20 years. It really has been slim pickings.

No it was Ryan who's penalty was saved by Blyth. We always say it was a Boxing Day game but in fact it was played on the 27th. Load of us arrived straight from the pub still half cut from the festive drinking just in time for the kick off. Freezing day but what a match !

Not my favourite, but I remember one, I think against Sunderland. Draw and not great, but I remember Dublin getting sent off for something right at the side of the pitch. Think that was festive period.
