Because maybe they don't have the answer yet. Could be many could be none if it mutated in the UK.
They aren't, it seems to media spin that it may be responsible for the spread in the south east and London. I'd say it's more likely the spread was because they didn't put them in the right tier and the virus spread amongst the population.

Cases are ramping up massively in schools around there, if a year group is compromised it still goes to 100-200 households who can spread it rapidly. Bubbles were never going to work for that reason. Combine that with the rank deprivation in some of those boroughs and it's no surprise
Two pubs so far around here have announced that regardless of which tier we're going in, they won't be open again in 2020. One because its unviable and another who have said they don't want to be responsible for any rise in cases.

Wouldn't that have been similar to what Wales did? Their figures are attrocious and might hint at what's to come for us in the next couple of weeks. I think the problem we have is our idea of lockdown is nothing of the sort. Poundland, Home Bargains, B&M - All essential and continuted to trade during lockdown for example. One of my local retail parks was heaving throughout the lockdown because half of the shops were still deemed essential enough to stay open. It felt like a never ending bank holiday weekend.
Those first wave numbers are a bit misleading though Fernando, the actual numbers were far higher but testing capacity wasn’t there

ps wingy - an earlier break coinciding with school hols probably would’ve suppressed case numbers a bit more but likely only delayed things for a bit (like Wales circuit break proved). In an ideal world I’d have been tempted to shift the school year a bit ie increase schools hols over winter but extend term over summer - appreciate easier said than done though !
My view was that if schools must be in, then extend the school day rather than change the school year. Get kids in for an extra hour a day and you don't need as many days in the calendar to begin with.
Private schools have overall had the same contact time but been able to have longer half term breaks, longer Christmas holiday etc. I don't think a longer day would have had much union opposition, not least because it would also give more holiday time.
I agree, esp when Xmas and new Year happen and the really cold weather settles in.

Sorry, agreed, the hospitalisations are a decent comparison/comparable.
ps rumours that Christmas rules could change. Not sure if I agree with that or not. I’d prefer to arm people with all the relevant info and allow them to make considered choices (as a lot will do anyway) but I guess some will just hear ‘I can mix with everyone for 5 days’
