So we moved house recently and boxes everywhere. Just getting round to sorting stuff and stashing in attic as you do. Came across an old programme . The team v Spurs that day was: OGGY, BORROWS, MORGAN, ATHERTON, BABB, RENNIE, BOLAND, DARBY, JENKINSON, FLYNN, NDLOVU.

Didn't Morgan score on his debut? At home v Wimbledon I think in a draw,might've been first game of the season too EDIT - he provided the assist for Busst

It's amazing on reflection how that team survived in the top flight and then how Big Ron and Strachan then spent millions in getting us relegated.

Not only survived that season but were comfortable mid table if I remember right. That season Atherton and Babb were as good a centre back combination the club has had, while Ndlovu was at his peak. Besides that though given Oggy & Borrows were at the veteran stage, the rest of that team was not the strongest on paper.

Not sure if fans realise how good Peter Ndlovu was at his best Ihis hat-trick at Anfield is still acknowledged by old Liverpool fans who witnessed it don’t think the successive managers he played under used him correct we should have built the team around him , he was as near to modern day Raheem Sterling you could get. With Ndlovu in the team that very ordinary looking team was okay comfortably midway in the top division.

First thought was when did we ever play with a back 5 before Butcher tried to be player/manager ? Unless Dave Rennie was a temporary CM for the day. I know he played DM while at Birmingham and Leeds. And Flynn and Nuddy as strikers. Probably the shortest attack force the Premier League has ever seen.

But you couldn't plan a team around him. I've got a great reference book from our days in the top division by Jim Brown, detailing the teams that played (for and against) and a brief review of the match.

This one read ''An excellent City performance, lacking only in goals. A snow storm gives a Winter feel as Pickering makes his full debut, but he is replaced by McGrath making his final appearance. Scott fouls Ndlovu, who scores from the resulting penalty. The Zimbabwean hits the bar near the end.''

Its funny how our minds play tricks with us. We look at that team and think its weak but in reality I'd probably take at least 6 maybe 7 or 8 over our current squad when they were playing.
I always remember going on the train away to Villa in the 90's when Strachan or Atkinson was in charge. I got chatting to a lad who said he'd rather have our 1987 team than all of the susperstars we had at the time (Dublin, Breen, Mcallister etc). I was thinking that he was mad but to be fair he was probably right.
We tend to look back at the past players and don't really give enough of them the credit they deserve. Most played for a long time at the top level of football in England.

I loved watching Nuddy play. His solo effort and lob over Southall at Everton in 1992? and his breakaways (Wimbledon away with 8000 Cov fans celebrating) were my favourites and they caught the Sky Blue imagination. But you couldn't plan a team around him. The problem we and he had was, to paraphrase something I heard about him, his skill was that good that sometimes even he didn't know where the ball is going.

I loved watching him too. Scored some fantastic goals for us over the years my personal favourite being at Leeds. Phil Babb had a shot that hit the post and it came out to Nuddy who lashed it home - looked straightforward but it was a really difficult technique to master.
