Doing business early (1 Viewer)

I’m already getting a feeling we are doing the same as last summer. Lining up all our transfer dealings as early as possible, then give the players a good time to train and bond. Very much looking forward to this summers activity.

I feel the same. If Hamer is in the country and waiting his quarantine clearance before his medical, we won't hear anything till mid-July. Same with O'Hare, lot of talk prior to his contract ending. Now it has, all has gone quiet. MR and his team are doing the right thing and working away from the press and headlines, unlike many times in the past when managers have been too keen to talk and players have been announced before they've even spoken to the club.

I think technically O'Hare's contract doesn't finish until the end of the month so couldn't be announced yet anyway. You'd have thought the club would have given a test to Hamer rather than have to wait for quarantine to get the medical done.

I like the quiet way we go about our transfer business (usually) although I do find 'undisclosed fees' very frustrating. At the very least they should be able to be distinguished in the relevant accounts going forward so even if you don't tell the amounts for specific players you can work out the overall transfer fees over a year and say x,y and z were sold for a combined total of £m etc.

Agreed and love the way Robins does this. It just makes good sense both from a financial and football point of view. Just amazed that more clubs don't take this approach.

I thought clubs were free to talk to players in the last 6 months of their contract, Like how we signed/announced Rose last January, But he didn't join us until July 1st when his contract expired.

Think we also need to consider that (possibly) some of our targets might still be playing for their current clubs????

That’s the rule for international transfers (i.e. under different FAs) but I believe nothing can be agreed with English clubs until the last month of a player’s contract.

Nevertheless, we could sign O’Hare now but is it the intention to sign him once we know when the season will start?

Not sure if that's only for teams abroad.

I'm sure players/agents talk throughout the season but just date paperwork to fulfil requirements.

With O'Hare he was probably unsure of his future. Until a week or so ago he may have been getting a decent offer from Villa. Cov may not have been promoted and a L1 budget wouldn't have given us the resources to go after him so we needed confirmation of promotion before we could give him a definitive offer. Plus he'd have wanted to see if we went up to keep his options open if a Championship club were to come in for him.

Loads of deals are 'agreed' and then fall through due to changing circumstances of the club/player.

I don't think we'll be waiting to save a few weeks wages. We won't want to risk losing out on players by waiting. Players who are out of contract will be weighing up options (or at least their agents will).

That's why I'm dubious with some of these rumours. It's just not the way we have done transfers over the past few years. The first we hear about them is when they are signed. (Other than Chaplin)

I do understand where you’re coming from, but you also need to remember we are higher profile now so I’d argue there is more interest taken in us for these kind of things.

As long as Robins and co keep coming up with gems like Dabo and the likes he can keep it as secret as he wants
Yep. With our season now over and no need to take time coaching etc., doubt he's stitting around. I imagine he's resourcing stats, videos, charts, liasing with the scouts etc.
