Look at the bigger picture, it's not nothing it's not everything. I think they are offering a lot of people a fair crack at getting through this. There is more to do, but in a short time frame in unprecedented times the Tories, who I would never vote for, have done what seems on the surface some good work here. Thanks for the name calling.

You really are a clueless c**t. A lot of people live hand to mouth even if they are lucky to have a guaranteed hours contract. Theres not bill or rent relief so if you struggled on 100 percent of your wages you will struggle even more on 80 percent. To say there aren't lots of people who work but still struggle to pay the bills is bollocks

You really are an angry man. I would advise you to use this lock down to reflect on where you are heading. Seriously concerned for you David!
On your point regarding the 80% of salary I would suggest that with traveling expenses and coffees etc...people won't be far off their salaries and to be fair to our citizens there will be less opportunity to spend money anyway.
It's a bold move in my opinion by a government that is navigating itself through a mine field.
Rather than posturing about today, it will be more prudent to wait and reflect on what history will say about this situation.

Love this quote :

Boris Johnson says he "doesn't want to get into moral name calling" and accepts that "what we're doing is extraordinary" by taking away the right of British people "to go to the pub".

"I understand how people feel," he adds.

But, he says to those "who go against the clear advice" from experts, that they would not only be putting their lives and their families' lives at risk - but "you're endangering the community" and making it harder to help the NHS and save lives.

Yes I saw that and thought back to the “I’ll still go to the pub” brigade on here

the chancellor just turned us in to a socialist country, he won!
Yep dom we own the means of production now. Wd still need tomhelp, people on zero hours contracts, who are self employed or work in the gig economy as all they seem to be getting is ssp.

Also bare in mind the people likely to lose their jobs are in the hospitality sector and these people are likely to be shift workers on zero hours contracts.

It is still also loans which would only help with deferred income not lost income.

There is nothing to stimulate demand either.

Right. Why does it always have to be an argument on here.

Covering 80% is great by them and more than I though they would do.
BUT
David All’Day is right, many many people struggle even with their full pay.

YOU ALL SMELL

To be fair many were praising Denmark for doing this and now this government is it’s not enough

What can be done by the government there? Its hard to say without knowing individual circumstances.

I think firstly they should look at pay for people in the NHS for starters. No nurse working over 24 shifts etc should ever have to use a food Bank again after this.

I’ve said for years I’d happily pay more tax to pay for more money for teachers, nhs staff etc. Said it on here a few times. The reaction I get is like I’ve just said I shit in my muesli before I eat it every morning.

And I’m in no way on mega cash. 2 missed paydays and I’m on the streets like many of us. I don’t confuse myself by thinking I’m middle class though.

More than happy to do the same if it actually got to them and not wasted on bigwigs or expensive tenders.

Brighton, does the key worker list look at bit big to you?

Also it's only 1 parent instead of 2?

It is and we have no idea how many will turn up on Monday. Senior management have said it will just be them for that day to gauge the demand and as much as possible teachers with heavy class load will be kept off the rota.

I should also add that I have been overwhelmed with the kind comments my exam classes have paid me today and yesterday. Lots asking for photos, confident their grades will be fine because they’ve been generally high during the year etc. I still feel gutted about the exams cancellation but at least I can now basically give them the grades they all deserve.

I wish people wouldn't argue so much. This really is a time to pull together.

To put it into perspective, I walked into the gym an hour or two ago and the news was breaking on the tv by reception. The owner and staff were all there and many were in tears.

I think the 80% thing is decent and more than I expected, but equally I don't know the full ins and outs with loop holes etc.

The gym is what keeps me going and now it's closed I really need to make sure I stay with it.

Best of luck to all.

That's my worry. Stuck in work or home for months without being able to play football or go boxing whilst eating crap.

That alone will make people ill both mentally and physically.

Liberals and Socialists get a helping hand from Boris/Tories in an unprecedented situation that no one has ever experienced and they moan, shocker....

Sounds like a good compromise they’ve announced though, moderated estimated grades for now and the option to take the exam after the pandemic as well if they aren’t happy. Couldn’t ask for more IMO. I might even keep my second job, depending on how the external moderation works.

Universities are far from happy

You realise Boris is a liberal, right?

I’m not moaning, I think for the issue of keeping on workers it’s a good effort. Now for self employed/zero hours staff.

Not moaning, it's a very generous and very welcome package.

But my question is... Where was this money when as many as 100,000 people died due to Tory austerity?

I'm not moaning at this package at all, it's very impressive.

Maybe it's because it's Friday, but I'm very optimistic about all of this. Yes, it's going to be very difficult times ahead, but we WILL get through this.

Do us all a favour on this thread, stop fucking moaning and arguing, then start making sensible suggestions and be supportive of each other. Yes, we have selfish knobs in society, but now is the time to pull together and get through this.

Now crack open a beer (fruit juice for @Otis) and chill out after a stressful week.

Yes Johnson is about as Tory as Nicholas Clegg
