I think if people just ignored the racist chanting from the crowd and showed no reaction to it, it would eventually cease.
The whole point of their behaviour is to provoke a reaction and they are succeeding in that beyond their wildest dreams.
The media and everyone else has been whipped into a frenzy over it (and so has this forum).
People expressing such outrage every time it happens just encourages them to keep doing it since they know it's working.
But, that said, if they want to continue in the current direction, they should abandon the game and award the three points to the abused team.
That, of course will lead to appeals and maybe even lawsuits.
And how will the people who paid a lot of money and travelled huge distances to watch the game react?

It’s a pretty random argument. You live in the US yes? So if Rosa parks just did nothing she’d have been allowed the seat anyway? I doubt that.

I would’ve rather they moved the game to a neutral location, didn’t board our original flights and had to buy new ones. I doubt you’ll find many that’d think differently.

But Gaz...back in the days of Regis & Cunnigham & more besides, it was ignored on the pitch - & the abuse is still with us to a much lower level...but abuse is abuse whether racial or not. It is less prevalent, but that is more societal as a whole I think

I see the Lazio game has restrictions but for me you just get what England got in Bulgaria - less people but still the racist chants - it either has to be behind closed doors or they forfeit the points - will soon sort the bad seeds out

It should not be down to one team, England or anyone else. to make the stand by walking off, it has to be down to the governing bodies making the stand. There are FIFA & UEFA representatives at each of these games, who must see or hear what is going on (that is why they are there). If the UEFA protocol is breached then they should have the power to do something there and then to enforce the protocols. That way it is the governing body not the teams making the decision. Have say three representatives in attendance and joint decision. Take the responsibility away from the players and match officials. Doubt that FIFA or UEFA have the courage to do that though

As for people saying England should have walked off and made a stand , sorry but it is the players decision and that should be respected. The players are the ones in the middle of it, are the ones being abused. If they choose as a group to stay on and rise above it by beating the opposition then that was the right decision for them. Had all or some of the players chosen to come off i would have supported that also. I thought England handled the whole situation well on the night, their reaction has started a debate that needs action from governing bodies. But it should not be one team or one player in the spot light, with the responsibility.

It is not simply a Bulgarian or Eastern European problem though.......... there is plenty of racism in our own country, and a worrying amount still at football games. It has to be challenged, it is not acceptable in any way. Doing nothing allows it to linger and that cannot be accepted

That's the point. We know we're going to win that game comfortably, so does everyone else. So it would show how seriously we're taking this situation.

Plus if in that situation if FIFA/UEFA decided the correct thing to do was to deduct us points and award them the win it makes a mockery of thier stance against racism and ruin any credibility they have that they might deal with the situation and their fitness to oversee the game. They would be considered not fit for purpose and an entirely new governing body would be put forward and it would be up to the nations who to affiliate themselves with.

I know lots of people want to see England in tournaments and winning things, but this issue is beyond that and we need some sort term pain for long term gain.
And you really think that would happen, dreamer by name...

Only way we'll find out is if we try it. Everything they've done so far has had bugger all effect.

If you want to make an omlette you've gotta break some eggs.

Know what you mean but all that would happen is that we get fined, points lost and risk qualification. If numerous nations stood together then it makes a difference but just isn’t going to happen

Also given the football fan mentality it could encourage terrace abuse at future games

That is a risk, but one I feel worth taking. Plus in that scenario it's FIFA/UEFA who would look bad, not us.

I agree it would be far more effective if it was agreed by a large number of nations (esp. the bigger ones) that they would walk off if there was racist abuse. Given the multinational state of clubs sides players could get together at their club sides and start to put this together themselves. Maybe it needs just one team to have the courage to do it and it will create a snowball effect? As has been pointed out it took one women standing up (well, sitting down) to inequality that helped bring about the civil rights changes in the US.

Maybe where we differ is that you're not willing to risk England not qualifying and being at major tournaments. I am.

But how many countries are outraged by this? Is it just us? I hope it isn’t but there aren’t a queue of countries statin the same is there? (Genuine question btw). Equally could you see this being done in the champions league for example, would any of those teams risk being kicked out for not fulfilling fixtures or failing to qualify, no chance. Sad fact but UEFA will find it easier to fine and punish clubs on this basis than root out racists.

I would love numerous countries or club teams to withdraw in unison but it just won’t happen

Did any of you hear the story of the team that walked off cause one of their subs received proven racist abuse from a linesman!!! Linesman banned for 45 days and manager fined for abandoning the game. Unbelievable

Initially yes but with the UEFA rules that contradict their other rules the CAS would either force it to be replayed or award the game to us.

£65,000 and two matches behind closed doors. Wrist well and truly slapped. Lesson learned, I'm sure (not at all, actually...)

Absolute pisstake, Bentner got fined about 90k for wearing branded pants didn’t he?
Just makes a farce of everything on this basis, clearly a similar walk off is needed the next time
Ah yes but UEFA were not getting a cut of the branded pants' fee. Have to make a stand, can't have everyone doing it. Bulgaria must have much money-spinning potential for UEFA
