We built a formation to accommodate him. He wasn’t fit enough and despite his limitations O Brien was always a better bet

Results declined sharply after his arrival

Wasn't what we required at the time and although he may have been good for our young attacking midfielders off the pitch, seemed to upset the balance on it.

Looking back at that period, it amazing to think we won an away league one game 5-0 with a back 5 of Charles-Cook, Aaron Phillips, Haynes, Stokes and Ricketts.

A bench of Llameiras, O'Brien, Bigi, Tudgay, Fortune and Kent. only four recognised defenders in the match day squad

I always liked Cole, thought the problem was he was ahead of the rest of the team. I can’t remember the game but he was playing good balls, but the rest of the team weren’t on his wavelength.

luxury player that we had at unfortunately the wrong time

Not entirely true, he arrived on 16th October, we only lost 1 of 15 following his arrival.

Our results declined sharply after our cobbled together defence fell over in January and Mowbray tried to hold it together with Martin Lorentzon and Bailly Cargill.

Yeah I remember, He was always two steps ahead of the rest of the team even at his age.

At fitness levels he wasn’t and the other forwards included a £12m player, Madison and Armstrong

Although O'Brien was shunned in favour of Murphy. But ok

Speaking factually though, you said "Results declined sharply after his arrival".

Do you want to argue against statistics and facts or amend your original incorrect comment?

they did decline - our average points ratio declined didn’t it?

When he arrived: Pos 5th P11 PPG 2
Our results improved sharply after his arrival: Pos 1st P7 PPG 2.14 (during the period after his arrival)

Results then took a downward turn as we know.

Your statement "Results declined sharply after his arrival" is incorrect. Its ok to say you were wrong or spoke incorrectly.

well they did as we averaged two points per game prior to his arrival and by the time he left they had sharply declined

I think an injury hit season was the problem, and Mowbray’s history shows a trend of slipping down tables post-winter. For some reason the team couldn’t cope without Reda, then his on loan replacements got injured.

IMO Cole did slow down momentum, but he did add class. There’s a stark contrast between Armstrong, Murphy, Maddison, Cole and Fortuné, Tudgay, Rose. Bigirimana as well - never been a fan.

This is just word play now. The lack of grammar in your statement hasn't helped you here.

Using the term "sharply after his arrival" suggests our results fell off a cliff as soon as he walked through the door, not true.

"Results improved sharply after his arrival, declined through late November/December, and then took a sharp decline in January."

Enjoy your day.

they didn’t improve sharply we drew the first 3 after his signing and the two big wins against gillingham and Peterborough he didn’t feature in.

Your original statement concerned his arrival, nothing to do with the games he featured in. "Results declined sharply after his arrival"

If you'd said that correctly first time round there'd be no issue. You spoke incorrectly.

well no as I’ve just pointed out the points per game halved upon his arrival - the first 3 games

He'll just keep altering what he said. Even if we'd won the first game and taken the lead in the 5th minute he'd change it to say we weren't winning in the first five minutes so that's prrof our form had dropped off.

With Joe Cole we performed well when he was on loan, less well after he signed on a free. But Coventry tend to always have a slump in the winter months.

we didn’t it his six loan games we won 2 - he was a liability

do you actually attend games?

His loan period was from 16-Oct to 3-Jan.

Record in that time was W6 D7 L1. 25 points or 1.78 per game

After he signed: W6 D4 L11.22 points or 1.05 per game.

And before you do it I already know your next move. "But I'm talking games he featured in". Well read what I wrote.

There is no mention of whether Joe Cole played or not. I said during the time he was on loan.

I now await your next load of bullshit trying to deflect the argument or change what it meant.

He didn't play ffs, anybody who attended matches will remember that he didn't have much of an impact and seemed to upset our rhythm

Well it’s just drivel as I stated he started 6 games. It’s desperate straw clutching and it still showed a decline

The only point I made about Joe Cole was that we did better with him on loan that after he signed permanently. That's a fact. I didn't make any statement about whether he improved the team/squad or whatever overall.

My main reason for posting was that once again Grendel was moving goalposts about. His original statement was
Results declined sharply after his arrival

Now for me to decline sharply after his arrival would mean that as soon as he's part of the squad results nose-dived. They didn't, as CCFC88 pointed out (although choosing the 7 games was a bit arbitrary).

It is more accurate to say they tailed off over the season.

Grendel then replied with

This is not "results declined sharply after his arrival". It is a moved goalpost.

When CCFC88 pointed out we only lost 1 in 15 after he arrived as another reason why results hadn't declined sharply we then got.

Again, a moved goalpost. Grendel just brings in about him playing games when it had started off as being after he joined. A lot of managers talk about the effect of a senior pro in the dressing room, how it can up morale and what knowledge they can impart to the younger players etc.

For what it's worth I actually largely agree with Grendel and yourself and felt, on the pitch, Cole was similar to the Gary McAllister effect early on. When he played the team seemed to be instructed to make sure the ball went through him, which made us more one dimensional and like Macca he seemed to be one step ahead of the players he was playing with so much of what he tried didn't come off. Plus by that time he was past his best and not match fit physically even if mentally he was once step ahead of everyone else. It was in hindsight a signing we didn't need.

But imagine if we'd turned down the chance to sign him and places like here had heard of it. It'd have been up in arms about the owners not showing ambition/not investing in the team etc/think how well we'd have done if we'd had Joe Cole available etc. Damned if you do......
