Not while they were at the club, but both Staunton and Gillespie have scored hat-tricks. Both for Liverpool. Staunton from the bench.

And Aden Flint scored a hat trick few years back for Bristol City in their 8-2 win over Walsall. He actually scored 15 that season which is amazing, if anyone’s bored has a defender ever scored more than that in a single season?

Ronnie Farmer got a hat trick in a 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace, two where penalties was Ronnie strictly a defender though in those days he was a half back and would be classed more of a defender than attacker. I also remember Bobby McDonald getting two v Villa and denied a hat trick by Andy Gray who made an incredible goal line clearance then proceeded to go up the other end and bag Villa’s winner... fecking arsehole

Steve Bruce got 19 in all comps during the 1990/91 season for United. Would kill for that from a Cov striker in recent years

Goalkeeper Jose Chilavert scored a hat-trick in a league game in Argentina, all 3 were penalties although he was fairly good with free kicks too

I am sure Alvin Martin did for West Ham, but I can’t think of any an city players in my time of watching. It’s not like we have been blessed with lots of forwards getting them.

Ndlovu v Liverpool
Gibson v Liverpool

Are the first two I thought of

He was definitely a defender. In those days we had five attackers, usually Rees, Machin, Hudson, Hale and Humphries.
Farmer scored every penalty he took for us except one and that hit the post.
He always side-footed the ball along the ground into the corner just inside the post.

I think I saw Ronnie last week at St Andrews and when we passed the said play up sky blues to my boys. I used to play football with his son Matt
