Everyone should really stop eating meat.
Having so much land cleared and used for cattle and sheep is bad for the planet.
Fruits, grains and vegetables are what we should be eating.
That said, I do enjoy an occasional hamburger.

I eat beef because it helps all of the veggies and vegans. Let's face it, if we didn't eat them, there'd be no grass left for the vegans!

Sorry, this is utter rubbish! The amount of rainforest and other woodland cleared for the growth of coconut and banana palms, coffee and especially GRAIN crops, which are now being used more and more for biofuel (which still produces CO2 when you burn it, unlike when you eat it) than for the food the world still desperately needs FAR outweighs that cleared for "meat crops".

You’ve got a good point about biofuels & palm oil tbf, but the vast majority of those grain crops are only grown to fatten cattle.

Aside from using different means of transport, eating a plant based diet is the biggest impact you can make on your carbon footprint. Individual action on climate change - Wikipedia

If god hadn't intended us to eat meat, he wouldn't have made it so tasty! Also, I tried to do my bit to help and wanted to grow my own food but I couldn't find any bacon seeds!

Never going to happen though. I’m hoping they perfect the impossible burger and bring the price down. That or lab grown meat

There is a lot of rain forest being cleared in Brazil for cattle

At home I eat veggie burgers, fake chicken or fake beef.
They taste pretty good when you get used to them.
I will eat an occasional real meat hamburger maybe once every 3 or 4 weeks.
The only reason being I go to a restaurant that my daughter likes and all they serve is burgers.
I'm really not supposed to eat any red meat per my cardiologist.
It really does clog your arteries and will catch up with you sooner or later.

I used to date a vegetarian, which as Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction correctly says means I used to be a vegetarian. The veggie stuff is alright in its own right, but I can’t resist a bacon cheeseburger.

Production of quorn and fake chicken etc has a massive carbon footprint. If you're going to be a vegetarian be one.

While there is land being cleared for cattle grazing, esp in developing countries, there is far more being cleared for agricultural crops and becoming monocultures like the vast expanses of rapeseed fields you see as you drive through the country are just as damaging to the environment just in a different way.

There is quite a lot of pastoral land than is used as such because it's totally unsuitable for crops due to nutrient levels, terrain etc.

Fake meat seems to disagree with me so now it's either real meat or I just stick with the vegetables. I can't do just vegetables for too many days in a row though because I end up with absolutely no energy whatsoever.

I'm of the opinion that insects may well be a replacement food source but this obviously will still be unacceptable to many vegetarians/vegans as it still involves the consumption of living creatures. But plants are living organisms too and you have to essentially kill a lot of them to eat them. Putting a carrot into boiling water is effectively boiling it alive.

I've always wondered why it is that we find stuff like cakes, crisps, chocolate, chips and other stuff that's so bad for us tasty but healthy stuff quite bland? You'd have thought evolution would've got rid of people like me long ago for the health freaks. Or is it just that they're far too new in evolutionary terms and we're waiting for the emergence of people who can process sugars without getting diabetes and eat red meat with having saturated fat clog and harden their arteries?

The thing about buring biofuels is fine, but when you eat the grain crops it's still environmentally unfriendly because you get more gas build up which is then expelled. This also includes methane which is a lot worse than CO2 in terms of climate change.

So if we do switch to a wholly plant based diet it won't be the cows farting us to death, it'll be us farting ourselves to death.

Cow burps not cow farts.

AFAIK the issue with plant based carbon is how long it’s been around. A plant that grows and is eaten in a year basically evens out but cutting down trees that have been capturing carbon for decades results in a spike. I think.

Quite possibly - a tree a few hundred years old will store a lot of carbon. However, the release of that carbon I'd have thought would also be released more slowly as the wood rots down - the tree will last a lot longer than a cabbage rotting for instance. It's also eaten by insects and thus 're-stored' and is colonised by other plant species/fungi as well that use the carbon to grow. So it's possibly swings and roundabout. I've not got the data so this is all speculation on my part.

My parents are now in their mid to late 60s and for the last 5 odd years have basically gone vegan.

There are plenty of ways in which you can cook decent vegan food that people would actually want to eat, you just have to get creative with it. The lentil chili recipe I sent around on here a couple of years ago is proof ;)

My grandfather has had a farm for his whole life where he keeps about 100 cows each year that feed off the land and are then slaughtered and sold to local butchers.

The problem is that this kind of farming doesn't sustain the modern day westerner who wants to eat beef and chicken seven days a week and thrice on a sunday.

The population is growing, in numbers and waistlines, which will just add to demand and in a capitalist society the demand will be happily met.

I don't see a solution any time soon as the government and industry don't give a shit about animal welfare or the environment.

Anybody watch the documentary about it (on the BBC, recommend you see it on iPlayer). Yet again market driven Toryism shown to harm the population, a national disgrace. Why anybody would vote for these scumbags is beyond me.
I take it that you are a well-balanced, educated and sane individual?
