Ha bloody ha.

Crossing my fingers it won't be and it will be Ann Lucas instead.

"Represented his constituency"?

No one has seen him around here in thirty years. He stopped campaigning in Spon End once it became a safe Labour seat. We get a leaflet through the door with his picture on it once every four years and that's it.

An MP who has represented his constituency for more than 40 years says he will not stand for re-election due to ill-health.

MP will not seek re-election 'due to ill-health'

Doesn't say what's wrong with him although he's 81 so could just be general old age.

Stroke I believe. My boss at works knows him through family and said when the Russian spy stuff came out that he couldn’t even talk to defend himself apparently. Quite seriously ill.

As much as i like the leftward direction of labour, i despise one way or another the centre parachuting people into seats

Fair. I also despise the “give it to Colleen cos she’s been to all the meetings” selection method.

I’d like an open call for local candidates and some kind of open hustings program ideally. Just because you can’t spend ten hours a week leafleting doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be an excellent MP. In fact very often the opposite is true.

Agreed. I don't know much about Colleen Fletcher though I know the wider family.
