Any tee totallers on here? I've decided to give it a a go. I don't drink a lot but when I do its to excess which then normally sees me getting cigarettes as well. Hate the feeling the next day. Looking at the bank balance is crushing the next day...I was out and about in Manchester for two days earlier this month and spent 250 quid on drink and not a lot else.

Any advice on how to do it? I have shite willpower so any tips are appreciated. I've got a gig coming up in four weeks which will be a tester.

I work away from home and was starting to drink about 4 pints a night, every night. Employer paid for it so why not???

Then mid December I had a bad pint. Not had a pint since, drank a bottle of rum over Christmas and literally not touched a drink since NYE. OJ and Lemonade or plain old water seems to do the trick.

You only have to stay sober a couple of times whilst all around are getting pissed and you soon see what a dick you become after a couple.

Yeah...forgot to mention the horrible feelings of "Did I really say/do that" Its weird but thinking about football/gigs without ale makes me feel anxious...like what else should I do? Mad really.

I’ve spoken about this before, but I tend to drink Heineken Blue a lot of the time now. I was another who used to come in from work and have 6 bottles of beer almost every night, ended up about 3 stone overweight. Decided to pack in drinking for a month (this is last October) and whilst I still enjoy the occasional few - and very occasional few too many - I don’t drink anywhere near as much as I did. Heineken Blue is the only non-alcoholic beer that I’ve found to actually taste like beer. Hits the spot and it’s about a third of the calories.

Often wondered about that. Reckon i'll stick to OJ or lime sodas. I might set small challenges...go to a gig without drinking, then go for a month, then no drinking at football etc.

Personally I find having a physical target to aim for helps... for me, I’m a dedicated runner, so that gives me a focus... but it could be anything really... weight loss... or financial...

I'm not a big drinker. Mainly as I've got older then hangovers last longer! Plus like you say if you drink at gigs at things like that you can easily spend a small fortune.

For gigs I often volunteer to drive, better than messing around with public transport and makes not drinking easy.

I did it in my twenties for about 8 months just to prove to myself that I could because I wasn’t happy with how my relationship with alcohol was developing at the time. It did change the way I treated alcohol after, I’ve never drunk as heavy or as regular as I did before I went T total for eight months and my main drinking partner who didn’t do it is an alcoholic in various stages of binging and recovering. I barely drink at all these days and when I do rarely more than 2 pints. The only exception being the works Xmas doo.

Yes, i find that doing any sort of regular exercise j helps cut down the booze. I have hardly exercised for months and my intake has gone up.

I went tee total for about 5 years, took home the most horrendous looking thing you'll have ever seen, missing teeth and all sorts, I decided then and there to stop the drinking.

The benefits are class though, more money, don't feel like shit, get into great shape. Etc.

I’ve always wanted to give it a go but just can’t seem to enjoy myself without a beer. Don’t need loads just a couple and I’m happy. Put it down to a confidence thing but I do really struggle to have a conversation without it...I’m clutching a can of 1664 whilst typing this!!

So I’ll be really interested to hear how you get on and what worked and what didn’t.
Oh.... I got my purple bin from where you recommended.... the fact that some Brummie has put an up the Villa sticker on it at work has not diminished my enjoyment of it on my desk.

I used to be a very very sociable person(pisshead). I went to Cyprus on holiday on my own for Xmas and New Year 10 years ago. I woke up boxing day wondering what the hell has happened here. It scared me that much I have not touched a drop since. I go on all inclusive holidays I drink soft drinks or tea. It really dont bother me. Even going to the Hen Lane before a game and sit there with a tea, get the piss taken no bother.

Been pretty much tee-total for over 15 years (have a glass or two of wine/champagne with Xmas dinner/weddings etc) but other than that I'm fine without it.

Admittedly that was because the stuff runs straight through me and nights out are no fun when you're spending the entire time in the toilets (I know that's getting comments so do your worst!). Also having to think about getting home without pissing yourself and then up every five minutes all night going so you get no sleep and end up dehydrated and feeling like you've got the hangover from hell after only two or three. Trouble is as I'm getting older it's happening a bit even with fizzy/sugary stuff like Coke now!

You do notice very quickly when you're sober just how much of a prick you can act like after a few. First couple of drinks is a great laugh but beyond that I used to end up pretty much as a chaperone stopping people getting their heads kicked in or getting them home because they're almost incapable of looking after themselves and you start avoiding the 'big' nights out or just leaving after the first couple to avoid the potential carnage. Saves a fortune though!

I find with lots of people it's the willpower - they're fine not having a drink but when they have that one it quickly becomes two, then four......A couple of weeks ago a couple of friends went out for 'a drink' after finishing work only intending to go for one and be home within an hour or two. One eventually left at 11:30 because their wife went and got them and forced them to come home. The other got home at 7:30am.

If willpower is the main issue then I can only suggest not having that first one - it seems to be the only thing that works. But that pressure put on you to have a drink can be huge and it's so easy to give in. Once people get used to it it's fine but you can get a bit of 'banter' for a little while because you're not joining in. But if you stick to your guns and keep on saying no it gets accepted and even a bit of respect that you're able to not give in to the pressure. Society's attitude towards alcohol is shifting and it is far more socially accepted not to drink now as a whole, but obviously depends on the social circle of individuals.

I went on the wagon for 20 years having been a raging drunk prior to that - at least I was well with the units limit

It was utter shite and I was surrounded by like minded bores. About 10 years ago I thought fuck this and now I’m back to the Adrian Childs league of drinking

When I was at college I was advised to go for counselling as I was permanently stoned. Amazing thing in the 80’s so I few of us turned up. I went as I thought it was a programme aimed at helping me drink more but remain coherent. I was given some dumbass quiz about my relationship with alcohol and some twat asked if I felt deep shame. I said no I thought it was hilarious and now I’m off down the pub.

I can quite easily go out and not drink, the only thing is if you are driving and you have to round everybody up as it ends up taking about 4 hours listening to nonsense.

I'm easily led too, so thankfully I know less hardcore drinkers then I used to. As I get older I can't cope anyway, and the current Mrs Wisdom doesn't drink, doesn't mind me drinking but... it at least puts a stop on me if there's somebody stone cold sober next to me!

Useful for lifts, though ;)

I just keep away from the pub. My problem is when I go in them. 2 pints leads to 10 and I smoke too which is strange as I hate cigarettes. I used to drink most nights years ago my life was centred around pubs. For me staying out of pubs seems to be the key, as I don't like drinking at home much. But come football day I enjoy a good drink!

I go to my local most lunchtimes. Just have the one pint, then I get home, open a couple of cans and that's it until the evening (like now) when I crack open another can and later have 2 or 3 whiskeys. Only trouble with that is, my whiskeys equal at least a triple or quadruple in a pub! And yet I don't ever get pissed. I truly can't remember the last time I felt even slightly pissed. I'm not bragging about it. I just don't feel bad. Maybe I just know when to stop.

I drink when I feel like it, which is not often. On a hot summer's day after I've done a couple of hours work in the garden, I'll drink a bottle of ice-cold cider and take a nap.
It takes me about a month to get through a six-pack.
I also like a glass of wine with a meal occasionally. Usually a sweet wine like moscato or reisling, or something sparkling.
I never drink red wine or any spirits.

I used to have a real unhealthy relationship with alcohol and looking back I’m lucky I didn’t die from it at times.

I went tee total for 2 years, which was the best thing I could have done. It was like pressing the reset button and really helped me reassess my drinking, that’s not to say that I never over indulge now, but not to the same crazy extent and I have a much lower tolerance now.

The first 6 months are tough and you can’t expect to just cut it out without making adjustments elsewhere to compensate for it.

I know a fair few people who find that first bit tough. It's not healthy to go from a heavy drinker to tee-total as your body can go into shock, but at the same time they couldn't stop once they'd started. It's a nightmare and well done for getting through it.

I stopped about five years ago, the last drink I had was a pint of Tennants in a hotel bar in Scotland.

The first five years are the hardest!

Seriously i found it very easy as my personal trainer just said stop for a week and the weeks went on

How does it affect your social life when you give up? Do you still go out to the pub?
Do people look at you suspiciously?!

Never really went to the pub much anyway.

When you tell people that you do drink and haven’t for years they look at you like you must be a recovering alcoholic rather than somebody who just decided to give up.
