What is the origin and significance of the 'D'? I understand it was a late addition but for what? I've seen keepers clear from it, fouls committed in it with no penalty awarded, and players standing in it when a penalty is taken. I've asked a few people and no-one seems sure. So what's it for and what's it's purpose today?

That's what I thought, but no-one seems to take much notice including the refs, which is why I'm asking the question in case there is some other reason for it...it seems pretty redundant

The 'D' is to mark 10 yards from the Penalty Spot, no player must stand in it and it does form a part of the penalty area.

If a player is attacking and the penalty is scored, it should be re-taken

If a player is defending and the penalty missed, it should be re-taken.

Likewise you will notice on corners a line is draw of the pitch on both the corresponding lines, marking 10 yards from the corner quadrant no defending player must stand within this, however referees have been known to ask for the corner marker to be removed.

The 'D' is to mark 10 yards (9.15 meters) from the Penalty Spot, no player must stand within the 'D' whilst the penalty is about to be struck as the 'D' forms apart of the penalty area. Just the penalty taker and the Goalkeeper are allowed to stand within it.

If a second attacking player is standing within it and the penalty is scored, it should be re-taken as it is perceived that the attacking side have gained an advantage.

If a player from the defensive other than the goalkeeper is standing in it and the penalty missed, it should be re-taken, for the same reason above.

As for the corner thing don't worry. Long and shot of it is to measure the distance at which the players must stand!

Ah ok...thanks for that. I shall look out for the corner thing, and you look out for how often the D is abused as if it wasn't there.

Funny isn't it, because the 10 yard markings for corners are adhered to pretty much always but nobody sits outside the "D" for penalty's.
