Despite them being in form, I feel like we will win this 2-0, Thomas and JCH, to score.
Win this and then lose to Bradford imo.

can't see anything but a loss unfortunately.
We just blow so hot and cold I can't see us winning 3 on the spin, be delighted to be wrong of course and would be really pleased with a point.

At this level ( Division 1 upper-mid table) clubs like Southend tend not to have runs of form, as they have currently had beyond 5 games, . You need bigger resources than they have. A law of chance creeps in. Therefore I think there is a good possibility of us getting something out of this, not least because we have shown we can make a good fist of it away from home (Bristol excepted). I hope we go for a defensive midfield initially and I would retain Hiwula, which probably means benching Bayliss. It sounded like Ogogo played well on Monday, so maybe him to partner Doyle even if it risks not much creativity. A draw is definitely possible.

There is a fair chance the next 4 games could make or break the season. We have 3 six pointer games - Southend, Donny and Stanley. Bad results could leave us to far from 6th place to make up the ground unless we have an unfeasibly good run

Southend have had a decent start but haven't played many of the better teams yet so hopefully we stand a decent chance.

We never win 3 in a row though 2-0 loss.

Same team with the exception of Bakayako in for JCH.
We are better than them easily if we are at it on the day.

0-2

one day when I can be arsed I'm going to have a good look at your posts and try and work out what the fuck is going on.

Simplified, it's a ranking system based of form and consistency. The first attachment is Coventry with a score of 1500 and the second is Southend with a score of 1534. Depending on the result, we'll be scored as follows:

Win (1532) +32
Draw (1500) +0
Loss (1468) -32

Southend would lose/gain more points as their overall score is higher (so a loss may be -40 points, for example).

All teams highlighted in green are fixtures where we won / favourable. All teams in red are where we lost / unfavourable. Yellow is a draw. From a very quick look, Coventry are generally all over the place by beating both low and high-ranked teams, and losing to mid table. Southend, tellingly, beat low-ranked teams but lose to high/mid-ranked teams. In short, could be a close game as we're mid-table.

The workings behind it are ridiculous: http://www.glicko.net/glicko/glicko2.pdf and overall I think it's a waste of time. But an insane amount of work goes into it.

On both occasions so far where we have had 2 league games Sat/Tues we've looked off the pace and lifeless in the midweek game. This is probably the most difficult duo of fixtures we could have asked for time/travel wise, there's going to be very little time for recovery and I think we will see our squad size utilised over the next two fixtures.

The strong U23s line-up we played on Monday would suggest Robins wanted everybody to have as much time in their legs going into these two.

Id expect an unchanged side on Saturday barring any new injuries then Jones Baka Kelly Ogogo Mason Shipley all in with a shout of starting on Tuesday.

That's a good point, and you would hope that a few of the players waiting in the background must be close to ready. I wonder how far away Jack Grimmer is from match action - can't be long?

Back in training from last Friday, so should be in contention.

Is Kelly likely to be back in for Saturday? Otherwise can't see the logic behind Ogogo getting the full 90 mins for the U23s yesterday. Kelly seems to be ahead of him in the current pecking order but will be in danger of losing any match fitness he's gained recently if he only gets the odd minute vs Southend, like he did on Saturday. If he doesn't feature, Bradford will be a full 2 weeks since the FGR game where he already looked in need of a run of matches.

So it’s simple really?

What's the point in it though? It's obvious that teams at the top have higher points and it's more valuable to beat teams around them. Stats for stats sake.
I preferred the graph that was posted each week last season.

I’m old fashioned and don’t get the obsession with statistics (possession, shots, shots on target etc etc). Certainly at this level any team can beat the other and therefore current points, current position are the only stats that matter

The team that scores the most goals on matchday is the key stat, and the one I am interested in.

And my prediction, 0-5.

Thomas, JCH, Chaplin 2, Baka and A Defender. Not sure which order. Can't see us conceding again this season.

Southend are unbeaten in 5 but their away form is better than their home form, their last home match was a 0-0 with lowly Oxford.
upload_2018-10-16_17-26-24.png

Amazingly they haven't scored at home in the first half yet and have only conceded once while we have only scored 1 first half goal away at Bristol when we already 3-0 down.

Looks like they go for it after half time though which is not disimilar to a lot of our games in the last 18 months. Might be worth staying in the pub until halftime.

Correct, only stat that’s needed is the one at full time. Only have to look at the stats on the England game last night to see it’s not all hinged on possession, shots on/off target and corners. Naturally they give a indication to a performance but it’s the score that’s the important stat for me.

0-0 at half time looks a banker this week on the half time coupon. Not confident on the result mind. Back to back wins is usually a pleasant surprise, 3 on the bounce is wonderland and talk of play offs is on people’s lips.

Micky Doyle was in the last side victorious at Roots Hall if anyone goes on bizarre theories.

Wasn’t Baka’s penalty in the first half?

My old dad was a Sarfend supporter when he lived in Wickford (about 9 miles away). He lived there from about 1958/9 until he passed away in 1971. He was a Coventry kid but moved to Essex for reasons unknown to me. I never really knew him until just before he kicked the bucket.

He was interviewed in the lounges before the game on Saturday and said he would be available for selection for Southend.

Not the happiest hunting ground for us Roots Hall, in fact Southend have been difficult opponents for us in the JH glory years twice they came here to get shock results winning 4-3 and 5-2 but I think we’ll get a point 1-1 draw I reckon.
