Reading up on some of our old players the other day, I stumbled over this article: Tony Sheridan: 'I'd like to be remembered as a player people loved to go and watch'

He was a youngster I was really excited about and thought was going to be a star for us. There was a bit of a buzz about him, he was earning rave reviews for the Irish youth sides, and he then broke into the first team before simply dropping off the face of the earth, so it's good to have some idea what actually happened.

At the time I remember worrying when I met a girl in Brinklow (bit of a tart, tbh) who said she hangs out with some of the City youngsters and that her mate had "shagged Tony Sheridan". She went on to say that he was a bit of a drinker and party animal, but I guess he's honest about that now!

It's quite a sad article. What a waste of ability. He could clearly play, but his head dropped after Gould quit, he was homesick and bored, and as he admits, "he blew it". You'd have to think that in modern times a youngster playing so far away from home would receive better support (and discipline). If only he'd come through under Strachan, he'd have made him move in with him and given him a curfew! Something else to add to the list of Things To Blame Phil Neal For.

Still, the League of Ireland George Best is a way to be remembered I suppose...some great technique here, and I especially love the last goal:

We had 3 irish lads at the time Gavin O'Toole Sheridan but cant remember the other lad, i used to go watch the reserves play and none of them stuck out, i wondered what the hype was about them and I certainly never seen any of the evidence that was in the video clip

No wonder he got frustrated under Phil Neal after picking Julian Darby ahead of him week after week.

Tony Sheridan was a Champ Man legend for me. My favourite player on the game for a year or two.
He was brilliant the first version he was in, AM/FC! If you play as City, he's raw but pops up with winner after winner in key games first season (which is more than can be said for Ndlovu and Quinn) before blossoming into Ireland's best player after the end-season break. If you're not City, you sign him for whatever lower league club you're managing.

In my Stockport game (started start of Season 2, bottom division) he was out of contract at City and listed, and amazingly interested.

That's him after a season for me. Goes up to over 10m once he gets his Irish call up. Check out Last Season-I don't think I've ever had a player average as high as 9.47, before or since! Cantona regen came close with 9.42 at a 3rd tier WBA in CM96...

Abedola and Mick Harford joined him in that team. And the LB Paul Williams too!

42 goals in 43 games. Classic Champ Man.

I always started off at Orient in, I think, 93/94. Trevor Putney could play across the whole of the midfield and even in his mid-30s he was awesome. I always signed a 16 year-old Chris Jackson from Barnsley for 6k, and he would be my top scorer every year until retirement. Sadly he was in a car crash in real life, and had to stop playing at 17 or 18 (again iirc - this was 25 years ago after all!).

Chris Jackson, there's another one! He was great for me as a kid for a Bristol City save.

Ha Torchomatic is a big Trevor Putney fan too, we were talking about him just a few months back! Again, he was in my Bristol City side. He's also part of the glorious Leyton Orient squad in the "Kilnsmann at Spurs" version (Lamptey at Villa that version): Ian Hendon at the back, Danny Carter AM/FRC....both guaranteed England internationals after a couple of seasons.

I remember in one or two editions there was Zlatan Muslimovic at the same age and ended up being almost as good. Obviously that was quickly revised

He played in the famous 3-0 opening day win at Arsenal when Micky Quinn scored a hat trick and looked like he was going to be a hell of a player. Think he joined the same time as Willie Boland who wasn't half the player, but ended up having a lot longer career with us. We didn't have a lot of luck with our midfielders at that time as we had not long lost Lee Hurst to a career ending injury just as he was looking a top player, and in this same Arsenal game Stewart Robson got an injury which pretty much ended his career too.

used to watch him in the reserves as a kid. Had a bet with a mate of mine he would go on to win 100 caps for Ireland :)

A midfield reserve trio of Sheridan, Boland, Sandy Robertson. Notable mention for Martin booty at the back

Tony was a mate of a mate from their early days in Ireland. He used to play heads and volleys with us on the concrete pitch at Walsgrave hospital where the MHU now stands
Bet he was good at that!

Lee Hurst was one hell of a prospect and Robson a Rolls Royce alongside him. Such a shame about their injuries, although we wouldn't have got Robson in the first place if he hadn't had a few already I suppose.

He should have done on ability and potential! But his story shows what a fine line it is. Often you hear ex players talk about how the best, the very best, might not have been the most gifted as youngsters, but they worked at it more than anyone else. The bit in that article where Sheridan describes getting annoyed at abuse so flicking it up and smacking it in the top corner and saying "it's that easy" sums it up really, football was effortless for him. But you need to stay fit and work hard too to make it.

Part of a couple of massive wins there against Arsenal and Liverpool!: Tony Sheridan

I can remember him firing a brilliant pass to set up an attack on his debut against Leeds. He was meant to be a fantastic talent but sadly it didn't happen with us.
Its sad to see how his career was derailed by Phil Neal, and would have been good to have seen how he developed if Gould had stayed.

In one of the games there was a bug that meant a free agent would sign for any club on any wage offered and the board would never stop you signing anyone even if your wage was 10X what was budgeted. I remember storming from the conference to the prem with Barnet by signing free agents, I think Davor Suker scored 50 something goals for me in division 3. Even when he got old and shit I kept him on a nice deal as a thank you.

Tony Sheridan, that's a blast from the past. Shows how your mind can play tricks on you as i remembered him as being a class player for us who then got injured. Oh well!!

Tony Sheridan used to live as a lodger near the Forum at a neighbours of mine and I got to know him. Used to play snooker regularly with him and David Carmichael who was another coming through at the time,he hated losing to me!
Too busy in and out of the Red lion on the Ansty Rd and then fell out with Phil Neal which resulted in him going home.
