Gumtree is always worth a look if you don't mind traveling. One of my buddies got a second hand bianchi ultegra gears really cheap but had to collect from Wales

I got a used once on the road £1000 Bianchi from Nuneaton for £375 in Nuneaton and drove to Kent to get a carbon Bianchi for £700. It was £3k new.

Surely the shipping costs on a bike via eBay would eat into the cost too much?
If you only need a bike to go 2-3 miles, anything will do.
Do they have any specialist bike shops around you?
Where I live, they usually have a few used bikes out front that they've taken in trade for bikes they've sold.
What about charity shops, do they ever have bikes?

I was looking to do 30-40 mile trips as a norm once I got going. I used to have road bikes years ago, and cycled a lot in my youth, but at mid 40's have somewhat lost the knowledge and don't have a clue about what is what these days.
I mentioned the Boardman bikes as I have seen them in Halfords and they have a shop at Evesham Country Park, but there is a decent local shop to me in Rugby and may go there and see what they have as I like to support my independent retailers. If not the ebay and gumtree suggestions are certainly worth investigating.

I think consider the group set if you are going to do regular mileage. Don’t want to start replacing due to poor mechs. If your buying Boardman brand new you would probably be looking at 600 ish so a decent second hand would give you more bang for your buck!

Apologies for my thickness Stu, but when you say go for the group set, what exactly does that mean?

I was interested in your post to Nick and that you would recommend a crossbreed/hybrid type bike. I have looked at them and been sorely tempted but wasn't sure whether to go for it or not?
I have looked at the Boardman ones, but wasn't sure if they came recommended? (I am looking the more starter end of his crossbreed range)

I love steel frame sets so that would always be my starting point......hence I like the look of the genesis range....The croix De fer in particular.....but I'd never buy new as eBay is the place to buy.
The fact they've got disc brakes, big clearances for wide tyres, braze-ons for racks and mudguards all on a nice comfy geometry frame with a decent group set and drop bars means it's got all bases covered.....ride on!

Ha ha sorry! It’s the mechanics of the bike. The derailleur (the bit that moves your gears), crank (bit you pedal from), shifters (the bit where you change gear). You can get varying levels of quality so buying second hand would probably result in getting a higher quality setup

Yeah i would probably get one of those things to go on the roof to carry the bikes anyway so we can go places. Have just been taking my daughter to the empty car park at the Ricoh so she has a massive open space with no cars to just blast round.

I'm not that fussed about brands I just want a bit of fitness and jogging hurts. Will keep an eye out :)

Just don’t go too cheap fella as it won’t last!

Worth considering whether your employer offers the cycle to work scheme. Got myself an entry level Boardman and with tax breaks it cost me about £7 a month for 2 years or something equally daft.

The Boardman is really nice, got it in the sales at the end of the cycling season, so set me back £350. It's a hybrid and it offers a lovely ride, can really get motoring along in comparison to a mountain bike.

Just getting back in to cycling. About five years ago, I was training my endurance levels to cycle around Europe (got up to 60 miles a day) when a pot-hole sent me flying head first in to the concrete. A shattered skull and brain hematoma and hemorrhaging left me terrified to get back on.

Training starts again now with 14 miles done on Sunday. Fitting it around gym and work has been difficult though.

Currently riding my Cannondale Synapse 2013 which was £950 on a cycle to work scheme five years ago

Hey Moff....how tall are you & whats your budget?

2 sweet steel Genesis rides here:

Theres a brand new CDF 20 in the limited edition Maddison team colours with over £500 off RRP......maybe worth a cheeky lower offer?

Genesis Croix de Fer 20 2018 - barely used - two rides only ! RRP £1299 | eBay

If you're a bit taller & fancy a higher spec'd beast.....look at this beauty for £825 from a shop in Derby......these 931 framesets are the dogs bollocks & used to cost over £1200 just for the frameset........Have to admit, I'm very tempted by this one too.

Genesis Croix de Fer 931 Stainless Steel Road/CX Gravel Bike - 56cml £825 | eBay

Not watched it but heard the protest issue!

Amazing racing stage weren't it? Couple of mental crashes too.......can't believe Yates held on to finish 3rd after his front wheel going from under him at the best part of 70kph......his adrenaline levels must be massive......i'd have been a shaking ball of mess in need of a cup of tea & a sit down after that wipe-out.....never mind getting straight back on a mental descent.......these guys have balls of steel.

I bloody love cycling keeps me sane. But at a pace that I feel like, no helmet no team sky kit just beautiful freedom. So much snobbery these days. Often say hello to fat 50 something cyclists in all the gear and get looked at like a piece of shit. Well Mr Hoy wannabe I've just done 50 miles without breaking sweat and I didn't need to look like I just entered the Tour de France to do so

There are snobbery out there I agree. I always say hello or a wave but don’t get in return.

As for kit etc, it’s a comfort thing for me, I have a couple of replicas but they are usually older ones for indoor training. Always wear a helmet however and it does sadden me when people don’t given the volume of dickhead drivers out there

I always wear a helmet these days......never used to until I had kids where my attitude to risk changed.

Funnily enough, my 2 worst accidents in over 40 years of cycling have both happened since wearing a helmet.....I got hit by a car & I also wiped out on a tricky descent chasing my old mate who I've been chasing on downhills since we were kids....hes annoyingly good at descending.

I certainly don't bounce like I used to :-(.

Isn't there some statistic that you're more likely to get knocked off wearing a helmet and hi vis than not? Because drivers switch off or something

Yes read something like this before, it sure if there are stats to back it up! Equally I am sure there will be plenty of stats showing how helmets do their job when a head injury takes place!

After my accident, my parents are terrified of me riding my bike without a helmet (I'm 24 years old) but I still don't enjoy wearing one.

I like to feel free while riding my bike. Like you said, it keeps me sane and gives me a break from people. I wear my cycling kit (shorts especially) as it feels like I've been buggered after a long ride without them.

After seeing the state of my father-in-law after he came off his bike I’d always wear a helmet.

He skidded on some gravel on a bend, smashed his head on the road. His helmet was a mess but he got away with serious concussion and a broken shoulder. Without a helmet it would have been his skull that was a mess.

I came off my bike about 7 years ago. Front wheel went from under me on a bend at about 20mph. I broke 3 ribs and had to have a X-ray for a possible detached lung. I had to ride home about 15 miles which I somehow managed. When I got home I took my helmet off and saw a massive dent in the side where my head hit the floor. I have no doubt that I would have been dead or have a serious brain injury if I hadn’t been wearing the helmet.

Good stage today, great ride by Roglic despite the criticism. Another great ride by G, stopped all attacks by Froome looked tired again.

TT is going to be huge tomorrow!

So glad G has managed to win it, his interview afterwards says it all. It means so much to him. He is such a different winner to Wiggins who was arrogant (I love Wiggins by the way) and Froome who in my opinion is a complete stuck up arsehole. Think this one win be the most popular win within the peloton for many a year!
