This General Election will only be about one thing: Our EU membership. Whoever wins the election will have the mandate to keep us in or move us out. This mandate will override any mandate parliament was given in the referendum.

Thought we had fixed term parliaments now?

There's only one winner here. Labour are too busy shooting themselves in the foot and barely anyone would even be able to name the leader of the Lib Dems.

Odd timing to sidetrack into this when there's so much to be done with Brexit not to mention Trump doing his best to start WWIII.

I did think they should have done this before triggering article 50, seems badly thought out to spend 2 months of the 24 (with 1 already gone) of the negotiating time pissing about with an election.

We should scrap democracy. The experiment has failed.

Ironically, I don't intend to vote as is my democratic right.

The only good thing about Democracy are the intrinsic natures of Liberty and Equality it puts forward. The problem though as always are political parties.

Yep, Abbott and Thornberry are 2 of my most disliked people in politics, they are both an absolute car crash when they are on TV.
Corbyn is so inept it's untrue, Labour are going to get absolutely spannered. I would anticipate the Lib Dems closing the gap to them.

I don't think it's going to be that clean cut. If Labour comes out with remaining within the European Union as one of their pledges, there could be a significant amount of wavering voters on this issue that wish to change their mind from the referendum.

I think they may go with a soft brexit strategy.

Labour have to make it an election about the NHS and Education if they want any chance of winning.

I expect the Lib Dems to catch up a bit purely on their Brexit stance. I really think Tim Farron is a cock though.

Odds on would be May to win by quite a fair bit, but I think the above will be closer than some expect due to Brexit still having erm, let's say 'upset a lot of people'.

Here is one? What about labour in coventry?

I mean majority of cov and labour voting cities up both voted brexit. Could this be the one chance to change it?

Somewhere between the waitress and her table.
Tory polls in 2015 were at 36% and resulted in a majority of 12 seats. They are now polling at 44%; even before the nation gets to hear Jezza and his mates self-destructing on TV.

I expect the SNP to be very against this; they have nothing to gain and everything to lose.

Libs to gain seats, but how many? I expect they will challenge the Tories strongly in some remain-voting areas.

If the Liberals have any sense, they'd go for the remain option at all costs. They'll lose certain seats easily, but they'll pick up others, too... and when the Labour message is muddied, it gives them a chance to build back up to where they were before Clegg sold them down the river.

Can see nothing less than a large COnservative majority, alas.

As much as i don't like her, it's extremely clever by May. Gonna be a landslide victory as Labour have such a short time to come up with a Brexit strategy. Gonna be stuck with her now for 5 years.

It needs to be about his policies for now - and all his MP's need to unite behind him.

Can you really argue with any of the things on education and the NHS that he is proposing??

It won't be and he is just not electable he is too soft on everything, to balance out I can't stand May either.

Not saying you're wrong - but it goes to show that some people will risk their children's (and their own) future in terms of Health and Education because it has now become an X Factor style popularity contest and policy is virtually obsolete.

Could argue a strong leader would get past that, mind. Even his chancellor would move people more through force of personality (whether you like that personality or not!).

That being said, since Thatcher, have we had a leader able to do that? Brown should have been able to do so, but allowed himself to get neutered by his party, at just the time when he needed to show himself as strong and different to what came before.

Who controls Labour's NEC at the moment. Is it still the Blair/Brown bunch or the new lot?

I understand removing the old members from their positions has been hassle. After all, their sacred scripture has been Machiavelli's The Prince, which is a truely gruesome book to attach yourself to.

They will be the one's who decide if MP's will be forced on the Constituent Labour Party, or if the CLP's can choose their own MP. Could be some fun times over the next few weeks for our own local MP's if it goes out to a local membership vote.

We could finally see how much support Coventry Councillors and MP's have in the local party.

I disagree. More, the left are worse at organising themselves to maximise their vote.

i dunno

idiots i went school with never talked about voting, then brexit came and they were all on it sharing british independence day pictures with farage etc

if they keep voting i can only see labour getting smashed

The irony is that the Corbyn critics in the Labour Party are the ones most vulnerable in terms of their own seats. If Labour get a hammering - he will still return as an MP and most of those most vocal against him will be seeking alternative employment.
