If you ever worry that Coventry City are becoming forgotten about in their decline, take a look on the Sunderland forum.
Another 9 page thread on us this week.

Coventry City

Brilliant.

It's almost a little flattering that they'd still give the slightest shit about us considering we're already a million miles behind in footballing terms. Without reading it, I assume it's a lot of Jimmy Hill stuff and just hope there's no classy references to the blitz.

And to win the games that matter or even draw like at Goodison that night, You had it in your own hands and blew it.
Long before was born, even if we murdered their goalkeeper it would still be long gone. I don't blame german people for the loss of my great uncle in Arnhem in '44. To wish the death of someones club because of what happened before many of us were born and none of us controlled is bizarre.

Unbelievable. :(

I could only get through 5 pages.

Because of something that happened 40 years ago, FORTY YEARS ago, some people won't be happy until we are wiped off the face of the earth!

Words fail me.

It's totally arse about tit.

What happened in 1977 has absolutely nothing at all to do with the fans of this club. Absolutely zilch.

Yet many Sunderland fans wish to see our club die and then laugh at our demise.

We on the other hand, don't hold any grudge against Sunderland football club, but only against their fans for all the pure hate and vitriol aimed our way.

As someone said on the Sunderland forum, should we hate all Germans merely because of Adolf Hitler?

No mention of Bristol City is there? There manager at the time shouted at one of his players to go down and feign an injury when the score flashed up. As for passing for each other the players were that shite neither side could put two passes together and we're passing to each other all frigging match

And I thought the guys on here had long memories about Bryan Richardson!
I was at the game that night and Sunderland fans have every right to be aggrieved but come on guys it is 40 years ago and karma sure has bit us on the arse many times since then.
If revenge is a dish best served cold then it should be well and truly freezing by now. I find it odd that this is still a sore after all this time.

You're right.

I was there too and had no idea what was going on that night. I was urging our team forwards to go and try and win the game. I was right under the scoreboard so couldn't see the scoreboard, so the whole thing baffled me at the time.

Of course it was wrong. No-one has ever denied that I don't think, but like you say, it is 40 years. Absolutely ridiculous to hold such a grudge for such a ridiculous length of time.

I would be thoroughly ashamed and embarrassed to hold such a bitterly jaundiced view after all these years.

It reminds me of a bloke I used to know who worked at Sainsbury's many years ago. He was a manager there and he hated all Americans and I mean REALLY hated ALL Americans just because his wife had an affair with one American.

The thing that annoys me is the slating/hating of Jimmy Hill...totally wrong about a poor man who is no longer with us...I am sure if we went on there saying bad things about Bradley there would be uproar and rightly so, some people have just small minds with nothing in between their ears to occupy them

we cant even laugh that much if they get relegated because we will be down ourselves!

I worked with a number of Sunderland fans for many years here in Coventry. Not one of them ever mentioned that match or discussed it at all with me.

Had lots of chats when we beat them 6-1 though. ;)

Must be something in the air up north for those up there to still be so bitter.

They're going down, so having read their comments it's the most fitting thing that could happen to them .

I find this really strange. The simple fact is their fate was in their own hands going into the final game and they messed it up. If they had won nothing else comes in to it.

Of course it was wrong but to hold a grudge 40 years later and celebrate Jimmy's death and hope we go out of business is crazy. Even if you think after all this time we deserve some punishment surely getting relegated covers it.

Saw about this thread on twitter, only signed in to say we're not all like some of those posts. I hope the decent ones amongst you realise that.

Banter-yes

However, some of that is wrong, simply wrong.
Just 'some' of it?

The whole thread is tragic and fucking awful.

What gets me is if this incident had been the other way round (Sunderland winning then flashing the score up from HR - I know they were away and losing that evening but hypoth is king here) and THEY avoided relegation, that incident would have gone down as a 'Mackem masterstroke'. It would still be spoken of in the language of footballing folk lore up there! Can they not grasp that any chairman would have instructed a similar tactic if he genuinely cared about the survival of his club??
As for 1997, well admittedly failing to get a point against those all conquering champions of the world, Wimbledon was always going to be a tall order. Breathtaking.
Some of their supporters don't just need to shake their heads to obtain a little clarity over this, they need to bash them against the gates of their shipyards. Oh.

Has much happened to Sunderland since 1977 to distract these bitter people away from this ? If it had been us who had been on the receiving end then yes, grudges would have been held for some time but what's happened since we left HR would have have put things into perspective.
Perhaps these people need something bad to happen to their club in order to shift their negative thoughts away from us to somebody else. Not that I really care. No doubt some of them have passed on their hatred to their kids who weren't even born in 1977 and so it will continue. Perhaps they need to see a doctor or a phsychologist...or an exorcist.

Jeez! Just tried to sign up to their forum to give my 2p worth and they won't accept my email address. Apparently, it has to be a business or works email! Fook me! Are they scared of spammers or what!! Fook 'em anyway! It was pure comedy gold reading their shit! :joyful:

Ha ha! That is just hilarious! A Premier League team still devoting so much time to us, we should be honoured! I always forget that the other games of the season and it falls down to that last game?!

What a bunch of losers, at least they will be relegated this season also...
