Anyone rate this place?

I went once, quite liked the fries (cooked in peanut oil), but otherwise found it distinctly average and bland.

Seems to be very popular and in a poll for which should be the next restaurant chain to move into Cathedral Lanes, it scored top spot. Turtle Bay was 2nd, 3rd place, Handmade Burger Co., 4th place Carluccio's and 5th, Pret-A-Manger.

Never tried Turtle Bay, but did really like the Handmade Burger Co. Five Guys was way way ahead in the poll.

Would be happiest with Handmade Burger Co (nowt else like it in the City) but would also love to see a Pret-A-Manger here.

I found it very nice, but expensive.

I would like to see a lot less chains and more independent places opening up. I personally don't mind paying a bit more to eat in this type of place.

Seen the one in Solihull but never tried it.

Never saw the appeal of places like Pret A Manger, much happier with an independent decent sandwich place.

Went o a five guys in London extremely expensive and very bland, it's quirky cuz they leave bags of spuds on the floor to give the impression the chips are fresh.
Also done a hand made burger in Nottingham with the same results, burger tasted like cardboard.
However my daughters think they are wonderful, no surprises there!!!
It seems if you make something very expensive and a bit quirky the younger ones with loads of money (ha ha) think t's great.
Here speaks the voice of an old fart who doesn't like restaurants!!!!

Think I must be the same.

In my day you would meet your mates in the pub, nowadays they meet up in Starbucks or something like that.

It's just a franchise the same as McDonalds is.

If they built it near Pool Meadow I'd go. I might even take my dog.

(One man went to Moes, went to Moes (Pool Meadow), one man and his dog, etc..)

You would probably get hassled by beggars and not go back though!

that was so good I'm going to ignore the fact they don't actually have Moe in their name!

Yep. Agree on the independent restaurant angle. Would much prefer it, but the capitalist world we live in now seems to promote the idea that everything should grow and grow and grow and you should start chains and expand and try and take over the world.

Not a restaurant I know, but Wilkinson's is a family run firm. They started off quite small, then grew and grew to a certain size. They were a great place to work for and it had a lovely feel about the place.

Now they are trying to conquer the world and sprout up everywhere and everything is now about profit and balance sheets and nowt else. It's now not a nice place to work and it's lost its family appeal.

That's what happens with chains. They sprout up everywhere and then there is a sameness, cos you can go to any city and get the exact same food in the exact same restaurant.

The Cathedral Lanes one I do believe WILL be a chain, so that's why I asked. Would much prefer an independent place for sure.

Just don't get the appeal of Five Guys at all.

Think the only fast food I really like is Leon.

I may be wrong but I think a lot of the big chains start off as small independent places then expanded into major chains, quite a few using the franchise model.

I think a couple even started as stalls at festivals. The problem is there are so many of them it's really squeezing the opportunities for the smaller independent operators.

Yes, indeed. Guessing the vast majority start off small. So many though aren't just happy with what they've got and want to expand and branch out. That's when you tend to lose the individuality.

Wilkinson's has changed so much and it's because it grew too big.

If you're looking ofr something a bit different to eat try one of the street food events.

I've never been to Digbeth dining club, (was going to go when it was at Cov catherdral in December but it got cancelled, hopefully it will be back soon), but it's on every Friday in Birmingham. I've been to similar events elsewhere and would highly recommend them.

They basically have stalls selling various street food from around the world and they do tasters.

I had some South Korean and Eritrean food and it was fantastic.

I went to a Digbeth Dining Club event at Coventry Cathedral last year (2016) Had to put 2016, cos 'last year' makes it sound a long time ago.

Think it may have been Sept/Oct time. Really liked it.

Fargo have street food events on too.

And now Five Guys Named Moe have said they ARE looking to open a restaurant in Coventry.

Oh well. :(

Guess that will be the latest for Cathedral Lanes then.

Wonder if they fixed the poll. ;)
