He was one of the luckiest players in the game. One of the worst players i think i have ever seen.
He was basically treated like a pet who could do no wrong by the Ginger one. I think they played a lot of golf together. A very clear case of favouritism up there with Phil Neil and Julian Darby.
I don't know about most underrated but certainly his effect on the team performance was unnoticed by many. For me we always played our best more often than not when he was in the team. He wasn't especially gifted but his energy, work effort and fitness were a benefit to the team. Yes he'd often lose possession but I don't remember him throwing his hands up in the air, dropping his shoulders and watch the opposition dance of into the sunset he always chased the ball, fought for the ball and regularly win it back then be off down the field taking the team of the back foot and turning defence into attack, he also did this when it wasn't down to him losing possession so he was a net gain for the team IMO. Trouble is most people remember him for his mistakes which admittedly is not surprising as he made more than his fair share but there was another side to his game which personally I thought more than made up for his mistakes overall.
We had the chance to sell him for £3.5m to Blackburn just a few months after we signed him, we should have taken the money...
I remember berating him for a wayward pass, stood up and screaming at the top of my voice about what a useless tool he was, while about 20 other people stood and stared at me. Then I slowly realised that the offender had actually been Ally Pickering, bowed my head, and quietly apologised to him. Because of that, I refuse to believe he ever made a mistake.
Telfer was very , very average but was in the team week in week out.
Remember though, he was in the top division playing against top players. If he was in our team now we'd be raving about him, worried sick that big named clubs like Rotherham and Barnsley were going to tempt him away and Timmy was going to accept £6 million . That shows how bad things have got.

He was Strachan's pet but was a better player (ok, still average) than some (ok, most) give him credit for
I recall sitting in the West End and not bothering to stand up with everyone else when he crossed the ball....got so used to him never putting in a killer cross that would resut in a goal.

You had me right up until you said Timmy would have accepted £6M. Timmy would have accepted £600K and then ran off to Joy for a pat on the head for accepting it meaning that her investors wouldn't have to dig their hands in their pockets for another year. Whether he'd be worth £6M or not would have been irrelevant, so long as it meant it wasn't going to cost the investors £600K job done.

I noticed his effect every time he played he brought the team down, the pet of Strachan, I wouldn't say he was the worst player I have seen (saw Wayne Turner) but not good enough for the side he was getting in.
I liked Moldovan and he was unlucky as we had good strikers when he was here and I still think john Aloisi would Ave scored the goals to get us promoted given chance.
Mifsud always reminded me of Telfer. very quick, but couldn't trap a cement bag or put in a telling cross.
I remember him scoring a screamer versus Leicester - making him a legend in my view!
Bang average. Ran around a lot. Mainly because his tactical and positional sense was nil. Yes super fit with good motor and didn't lack passion. But the key was probably, "I would rather be a professional golfer than a footballer." Yes it is an accurate quote.
I remember singing ' you're shit even telfer scored' at gillingham when big Ron was in charge. Good times...
My favourite under-rated player of the 90s is David Rennie. I remember him being epic when we came back to get a draw against Wimbledon with nine men.

I too thought Rennie was underated, not quite the physicality of Curtis, but put his body in where it hurt.
Definitely underrated and his goal ratio on leaving us proved it.
I also hate to say it, butclook what that twat bellemy did after he left us.
Remember Williams and Telfer had Nanny Strachan for Southampton and Celtic to prolong their stigma.

Back in my younger days I took the FA coaching certificate, the instructor had never made it in the game but had come through the ranks with Telfer. He told me at the time that Telfer was the best in the year and was headed to the top clubs, he was a seriously good footballer however after 1 of his his friends was killed in an accident he fell out of love with the game and treated it as a job. Hence he ended up playing for us!
