Liverpool FC invite Coventry star Cian Harries to train with first team | Daily Mail Online

Liverpool have invited Coventry City defender Cian Harries to train with them ahead of a possible transfer.

The promising 19-year-old has been compared in style to former Liverpool captain Alan Hansen for his willingness to step out of defence with the ball and his composure under pressure.

He has made 14 appearances for Coventry's first team this season and signed a contract extension in November which ties him to the club until 2020.

He had a brief loan spell with Cheltenham Town last January and Liverpool scouts have picked up on his potential.

Former Coventry boss Tony Mowbray hailed the teenager as 'a fantastic prospect' when he signed professional terms in 2015.

Liverpool have now asked permission for the Wales youth international to train with their players at Melwood ahead of a prospective move.

Cash-strapped Coventry would like Harries to stay and develop but recognise it is too good an opportunity for all parties to turn down.

Can't blame him if it's a permanent move, but once bitten twice shy eh with Conor Thomas.

I think I might start supporting the U18s instead of the first team. You get a good few years of quality homegrown players before they're sold. It'll be like being a City fan 20 years ago.

Thought the other week it would be good if their games were on at reasonable times.

I don't mind if I get to see a fair bit of a player, I felt I saw Wilson develop even though he went after his first successful season, same with the likes of Christie. Hate it with Bigi, Thomas, Madders, etc where you don't even get a season out of them before they're off to someone's reserve side.

Bit odd isn't it. Are they basically wanting to take him on trial while he's still under contract to us?

To think wasn't it letting Connor Thomas go to Liverpool that led to ransom falling out with Sisu etc.

I doubt anyone is forcing them to move. If a big club comes in with more money, who wouldn't go? We are a very small fish.

As we are now cash flow positive, close to running break even, set to make a million quid profit add to that a million plus fee for Stevenson AND a possible kick back from Callum Wilson sale and get another sizeable wedge from Liverpool I expect guru Fisher to allow manager Slade at least a 100k for players !!

I don't like this idea, if they want him let them pay. What happens if he goes there and then gets sent back like Connor Thomas, will other clubs think if Liverpool don't rate him nore do we.

Surely you offer the same deal as Thomas? Cash up front and you can have him on loan to have a butchers.

Or maybe someone has said to them 'We have this great ball playing centre back prospect, would you like a look at him?'

You are right I doubt anyone is forcing them to move but is anyone trying to convince them to stay?

On the other side of this. While I'm sure it's not true at all for all young players who move:

The only CCFC academy prospect I've ever had any kind of close knowledge of was Bigi as I worked with some very close friends of his who would keep me informed. By all accounts he didn't want to leave when he did and was pushed out by the club.

So I don't think it's cut and dried either way.

How can we? Stay here and earn less? It happened when we were a top flight team so we don't stand a cat in hells chance of keeping them now.

the problem with the stevenson, maddison and harries deal is that we are just getting ripped off. lookman is moving to everton for 10 million from charlton. i'm convinced maddison will be twice the player lookman is, and there's no reason to think stevenson won't be either. it's a firesale, and we aren't getting anything like value for these players.

Didn't Lookman play for Charlton in the championship last season? He represents England too? This will increase his fee above what we got for Maddison. That said, you're right, we sell players far too cheaply sometimes. That's using hindsight though. Looking back we got 1 million for Bigi and then got him back for free. That ain't bad business.

if there is someone in the club who is capable of convincing him that he is better off at City than at Liverpool then I will personally pay their airfare to the middle east where they can use their considerable salesmanship to persuade a rich Sheik to buy the club.

Surely a player who is under contract can't go on trial with another club.. weird that is!! I suppose he's not playing at the minute. But his head would be turned and dictates his value once trained there .. get them to stump up money first !! And a few good loan players from them!!

Liverpool paid £3.5m for Joe Gomez from Charlton in 2015 who had made 21 appearances for them (according to Wikipedia).

I think we should be pushing for between £2m-£2.5m for Cian.

He's been invited to train and Coventry have to agree to it.

that was true. Was settled here and he was a quiet lad who didn't think he was right for a big club at the time.

Lots of young players stay at there clubs and play 100 games before moving on, it's not unheard of.

Just seems like the club are patting them on the back on the way out and telling them what a great opportunity this is, rather than fighting to keep them and then letting them go at the right time.
