Butts park arena? (3 Viewers)

Maybe a restricted covenant should have been placed on the Ricoh Arena, limiting its activity to professional football.

How spiteful are Coventry City Council?

It's the bit that, really, I hope is followed up.

For if it were true, it would be disgraceful.

Anyway, if it's *really* possible to do 15k and then go up to 25k, then I bloody well hope this happens!

Another thing people need to remember there are currently 2 teams playing there at the minute, CRFC & Cov Bears.
Could the stadium cope with 3 teams?

They don't need to provide any parking beyond a minimal amount for the club itself. The Emirates (capacity 60k) seems to do Ok.
Exactly, there's plenty of grounds with little to no parking and its not an issue yet when theres even a slight possibility of a new ground for us everyone wants to find fault with every little detail they can.

Why could it not? We wouldn't all play at the same time though. Keep going though, I'm sure there's other things you can think of.

But then you have the argument of do you build a 30k stadium on the off chance of 1 or 2 big games a year?

You build something extendable in case of promotion etc.

and thats the other point i forgot to mention thanks nick expansion option should be included, since i dont live in cov and never been or seen butts areana you think this option is available at the butts site?

Bears play on Sundays in the Summer (I think that applies to the Rugby League teams as well - I'll get me coat ! )

Damian Gannon:

He said: “I understand that the relationship between CCFC and the Council has not been great but this presents a real opportunity for us to “press the reset button” on our relationship with them and work to produce an outcome that works for the football club as well as the local authority. It would seem churlish for the Council to reject such a proposal out-of-hand particularly as a move closer to the city centre so obviously fits in with what we have been trying to achieve over the past few years in terms of growing the city centre.

“I have written to the Football Club and the Rugby Club asking for a meeting so I can get a fuller appreciation of these proposals and how we can all work together to make our city prosper and our local sports team achieve their true potential.”

He said: “This is very exciting news not only for the Butts and Spon End but also for the city as a whole. There is significant potential to regenerate this area creating jobs and opportunities for local people.

“Whilst I understand it still early days and there is a-lot of work still to be done the proposals sound as though they fit very closely with the council’s political, economic and social objectives of focusing on growing the city centre and becoming a top-ten city. This proposal would bring thousands of people into the Butts and would have positive knock-on effects to local businesses in the city centre.”

Did I say before how much I liked this bloke? ;)

But great, exactly the noises we want to hear.

So... we're actually getting what we all wanted, aren't we?

Club are coming up with practical solutions for a ground, that the rugby club are on board with.

Council suggest there is at least tacit approval of plans if they can be worked out.

Isn't this the best start we've had to finding a solution and moving on for nigh on an eternity?

(I'm still expecting it all to come crashing down, but the club are looking at a site in the city, and the council say they want to work with them to make it happen - this is immense progress!)

CCFC have now released an official statement.
What I don't get is that they say "It is important that the club continues to work towards securing it's (sic) long-term future".
They have always said that the only way to achieve long-term financial viability is to own their own stadium, but Cov Rugby seem to be saying that they themselves would remain owners, and the Sky Blues would be tenants.

There is always a logical impossibility in what SISU say they want to do and what other people do or intend to do. It never adds up.

I cant find it but I am sure this restrictive covenant isn't new, sure I saw mention of it a while back. That the 125 year lease CRFC had contained the restriction

OSB, do you know much about these covenants?

Assuming you do (and apologies if you don't), could there have been a reason why there wasn't one in place on the Ricoh for other sports?

Encouraging words from Gannon - makes me a tiny bit hopeful something can be resolved.

Knowing our luck, the rest of the council will tell him to shut up and tow their line.

If people had listened carefully they would have heard 15k capacity maybe extending to 25k. but no real probablity of any extention above 15k... Non starter.

I would think that it was always intended as a multi purpose and multi sport venue - so that it would maximise income ?:

Would think the leaseholders of Butts Park Arena would argue it was therefore unfair and unreasonable for such a restriction to be on their stadium. These things can be changed but not always. It maybe a restriction because of the neighbouring properties for instance

Gannon's the labour councillor who re-tweeted someone asking the electorate not to vote labour at the local elections. The bloke that's in charge of the councils stake in cluster-bombs. Think he maybe after a way to still be relevant in local politics after the soon to be held clear out.

I do not think there were any neighbouring properties when the Head lease was first granted - certainly not residential.

Then surely it limits Cov RFC?

For example if they got promoted and got to Wasps level, what difference would say 10 - 15k Rugby fans make around the area to 10 -15k football fans?

Of course if Gannon's comments are true of the general view in CCC, it appears the will is there to change anything, anyway. That in itself is encouraging.
