Me too, I was in the Kop and everybody jumped up, I had no real idea what happened other than we scored till that evening.
A player with lots of tenacity and lead by example. Skillful and technically good, he would give an opponent the slip or embarrass him through his legs. But he was a man's man, never overly fit rising to the occasion and never let the team down, always putting in a performance. A character on and off the field too. He was a player who I remember well as I began my love affair with Coventry City. RIP Ernie, you were a part of some great memories and a very good team, Machin, Carr, Martin et al)

Ernie Hunt has to be one of my all time favourite players. Another stand out goal he scored was against Burnley at Highfield road, when in the second half he was passed the ball in the centre circle and looked up and seeing Tony Waiters off his line chipped the ball over his head towards the Top end. The pained look on Waiters face as he back peddled and finally dived backwards and only getting his finger tops on the ball before it hit the net was a picture.

I’m 56 now. According to my mother I announced when I was about 7 that I was henceforth to be addressed as ‘Ernie’. Big part of my formative years gone, very sad news. RiP Ernie.
Sad news, the donkey kick with Willie will be forever mentioned in football history, people might not be familiar with the name but the images of the goal is known by so many. I was very young and only thing I remember first had was him being booked for arguing when he committed a "foul" for doing a bicycle kick. Didn't he part own or run a sports shop near the Hollyhead Road at one point? Seem to recall my dad saying he got me a City top from "Ernie Hunts place". A lovely chap by all accounts, RIP.

I was playing for my junior school, Wyken Croft and Ernie came to train with us. Not much football played as he had us in fits of laughter, a really nice guy.

I watched that amazing goal go in. What a player. What a legend. Bless you Ernie. I know you were 75, but it still upsets me to hear of a legends passing. Up there with big Cyrille, practising the "donkey kick" together! RIP.
Long before my time as a fan but it's clearly very sad news for the whole Sky Blues family. As a club we don't have many genuine legends and we've lost one with the passing of Ernie. All the best to his family and friends, sad times.
I was behind the goal that donkey kick game in the West End, and we all went mental when it went in the net. They showed it every Saturday night on Match Of The Day at the start, and it was some goal,and Ernie got goal of the season for it. RIP Ernie.
Ernie was one of my favourite players with the goal from the half way line against Burnley being my favourite goal. I was sat in the Main Stand for the donkey kick goal, a routine they repeated later in the season in a game against Tottenham, before the kick was outlawed (kiljoys), when Ernie this time hit the bar. Ernie was an odd shape for a footballer, not athletic at all. He also had a very stiff looking way of running and walking. I was at a game at Swindon a few years ago and Ernie, having played for both clubs, came onto the field to wave at the crowd. At that stage he seemed barely able to walk, maybe his knees had gone, but he still has that same awkward way of walking.
However, with the ball he was magic full of skill and invention and the possessor of a rasping shot. I also remember him scoring a hat trick against West Brom. As mentioned above, just like Hutch, he was worth the admission money just to watch him play.

Just missed him playing for us but met him at a few legends days. Always happy to stop and have a chat and a laugh.
It was rumoured that the first day of demolition of HR had to be briefly suspended as he and Bill Glazier were still in the Main stand players bar.

I thought it was in the Parade at Cheylesmore, but he may have had more than one sports shop.
One of our all time hero’s was Ernie loads of on the ball ability, no real pace as such but a quality act. I might be wrong but I think he signed the same day as another city hero Chris Cattlin and made his debut in our shock 2-0 home victory against star studded reigning champions Manchester United. He was a big reason we survived the drop that season.
