Its the best solution, the league can essentially mothball and come back when this is all over. The vast majority of players are on contracts that only see them paid during the season so by not starting up you reduce the playing budget to zero. The number of full time employees at most clubs could be counted on one hand, they'll be on furlough at the moment but obviously that will end soon. Most clubs don't own their own rinks, they hire the ice time so again no training and games, no expenditure.
The ones who may be in trouble are the ones whose rinks are either self owned (Fife), or owned by a property developer (Glasgow), the others are either publicly run, huge multi use arenas or owned by either Planet Ice or Silverblades. They should all be OK.
Owner of the Blaze was on CWR after our game this week. Said one season off is not a problem, if it stretches into multiple seasons there could be an issue. Worst scenario would be contracting a full squad, flying them over, getting them housing etc and then having to stop again.
