when i lived in coventry (22 years ago) always went to fishy moores on sat afternoons after swimming aged about 10ish (1978) when i started goin drinking it was always the parsons nose (1985ish) but the chippy at toll ber end was always my local, now i only have a chippy dinner when i have a day out in whitby, my local chippy now is the one near the mount pub near oakwell (barnsley f.c),
Ah, The Parson's Nose....Happy days, faggot and pea batches as well. Mind you the chinese next door was where I had the best beef curry ever. I heard much later that they found hundreds of cat pelts in the garden at the back so it was probably cat curry! nevertheless it was fantastic.

Had a few curries from there. Went in whenever the queue at the parsons nose was too long. And I thought I had never eaten cat before :D

Luigi who owned The Parsons Nose was jailed about 10/11 years ago. It turns out he had abused his daughters when they were youngsters, and then he started abusing his grand-daughters. I would see him in the casinos around the Midlands, he came across as a loveable old Grandad type, but he was a beast.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Chip shop that used to stand on it's own in Wood End yrs ago, it was just off Hilmorton Road behind the Community centre. Best chips ever in my opinion all them yrs ago.

Always go to the Marina at the bottom of St James' Lane. Never had a bad portion of fish and chips from there, always a queue therefore always freshly fried chips!!!

The worst fish and chips I have ever eaten was from Gabriels in Earlsdon High Street. Disgusting!!!

There is nothing wrong with the chips in Gabriels! I'd say they are generally better than Frydays on Fletchamstead Highway or the Torrington Avenue Fish Bar. Fishy Moores was well worth a visit as a kid; I agree with the earlier person who said many of these places are now jack of all trades and master of none (now they serve everything from pizza to fish and chips to curry to kebabs).

Haven't been there in ages due to a slight relocation, but the one in Jubilee Cresc. and the one on Holyhead Road has seen a vast improvement since it was reopened.

Maybe the mega chippy want to buy some advertising :)

On another note, there's a great chippy in Galley Common. Next to the shop near the social club!

When I'm back i go to two Chippies depending on where i am at the time : Marina Fishbar at the top of the hill on Barker Butts Lane or Spon End Fish Bar by the Arches as they give you massive portions.
Damn.. Now I'm craving Chips and curry sauce... :-(

It's been a good few years since the lived in Coventry but Barras Heath used to be good and Marinas on the London Road. The latter being just down the road from where the lived.

I do miss the places back home that don't deep fry everything in sight. They even do batches filled with the crumbs of batter that fall off the fish, it's impressive commitment.

I miss batter that's been properly cooked, it's often hard to tell these days where the batter ends and the fish begins.

When I was a kid we used to go on coach trips from Coventry to Drayton Manor and Wickstead Park, they served the best fish & chips I've ever tasted.

I remember Wales Chippy BHSB! On the corner of Howard Street. I used to live in Joseph Halpin House opposite and would use them most week-ends! (Nice to see old posts from 2011 revived eh?! :claping hands:

My regular routine as a kid would be into town on a Saturday morning then walk up to HR stopping off at Fishy Moores on the way. Our local chippy was Mister M and the one at the top of Daventry Road (Spires?) both OK but nothing special.

Big bloody mansion
The Poseidon.

It's reasonably new - a few years old at most - and located on Daventry Road in Cheylesmore.

They are FANTASTIC, and you'll often see long queues in the evenings. The fish and chips are always fresh, unlike the sticky and greasy lunchtime leftovers you see at other places. And the batter is soft and damn near skin-tight, not jawbreakingly crunchy.

Worth going out of your way for.

Have to mention my local chippy here in Newport. You get LOADS of chips and the cod is to die for! You have to wait about 7/8 minutes for everything because they cook them fresh.

Many years ago now, but a family holiday on the IoW, and the chip shop wherever we stayed (Christ knows where!) did the best cheeseburgers I've ever had.

Nick's Plaice on Kingsley Park Terrace in Northampton (different Nick - not the keyboard warrior on here! ;))

Anyway, when I lived in Cov as a kid (in the 70's), wasn't there a decent on near Sandy Lane?

Binley mega Chippy gets my vote, always worth the massive Friday night queue. Even when drunk after the Pink Parrot was never really tempted by parsons nose, terrible standard of chips. When a kid it was always the one on Charter Ave, near the half sovereign, we used to take our old papers up for them to put people's food in, I'm glad food standards have improved, I dread to think what germs I picked up from someone else's old copies of the Sun.
