As Finland for deffo don't have any plans to join NATO we are at the "spout any nonsense and the western media will post it as a new serious issue" stage of the news cycle

That’s not what Finland’s former PM thinks….

Anyway, as we all know, this was all NATO’s fault to begin with, so I’m sure if Finland and Sweden do apply to join then people will fully understand if Putin invades them as well.

You forgot to mention the EU as well.

This is where it seems counter-productive.
Putin may have a rhetoric for his own people about the Ukraine but all he has done is "frighten" other nations who are more likely to boost NATO presence or add NATO protection. Too many of the leadership of the NATO states bordering Russia & Ukraine are of an age when they remember Soviet occupation and the regimes they propped up.
PM here is fooling no-one with his talk. Is mis-reading his own support base. Thinks energy security is more important message than national security.

Ferage thinks he’s a hero in Finland because a Finnish right wing MEP once hugged him. I’d imagine Finnish people are looking at Ukraine right now and thinking EU freedoms or vulnerable to Russia? We’ll take the EU freedoms thanks. Same for Poland which the Brexit press were salivating over the prospect of Polexit not that long ago when the Polish government tried to water down its legal system in a way that would threaten their EU membership. I bet they too are thinking that actually being part of the EU isn’t that bad , as they have Russia invading their neighbour from another one of their neighbours. Especially as I think I’m correct in saying that Belarus contest land on their Polish border I would think that Poland is feeling quite grateful for being EU and NATO members right now.

He's not the PM anymore and his party not in power. I hate to be the one to say this but much like the weirdos derping about Corbyn what does it matter what he thinks? The current PM etc don't have any intention of joining nato.

This is the same as when John Major or Tony Blair tell people we should rejoin the EU

Finally

Left with no choice after the EU announced it.

Tony, if you are intent on making this thread entirely about the EU then you need to have a bit of self-awareness.

The EU is dragging is legs on most of the stuff at the moment, and its response is some of the weakest there is out there. In fact, the response has been shameful and embarrassing quite frankly. I do not know how they can stand idly by like this. I am dumbfounded in truth.

Current PM:

Unlike Sweden, Finland has adopted a so-called “NATO option” provision, which means that “if Finland’s security requires it, Finland has the opportunity to apply for membership,” Prime Minister Sanna Marin said.

That was her position a month. Lot changed since then.
Finnish opinion polls have steadily be moving towards a pro-NATO stance over recent years and mistrust etc. of Russia has seemingly risen at the same rate.

Russia just threatened finland and sweden if they tried to join nato.

Essentially Russia are trying to stop a nation joining nato ever again in the future by attacking any nation who shows intention to join, knowing nato will have it's hands tied and won't interfere with an attack on a nation that is not currently nato
Which given what has just happened to Ukraine would have me reaching for the phone to get a membership card pronto.

It shows he won't attack NATO countries. So be a NATO country and you're safe.

Whole thing is bizarre.
Are very few NATO troops in Baltic States and Poland. Putin's actions are going to change that.
There are no significant ethnic Russian populations in Sweden or Finland so he needs a new angle there. Even he will find it a hard sell that Sweden is a threat to his people.

The concern still remains (NATO or not) is if he repeats his tactics in Crimea / Ukraine with the sizeable Russian populations in Estonia and Latvia. Or maybe Moldova is next on his list.

For someone who didn't want NATO troops on his border:
1. Launching an invasion is a surefire way to bring them there.
2. Taking over Ukraine gives you a big border with a NATO country (and Latvia and Estonia already do anyway)

Almost like he's itching for someone to do something so he can start a proper war.

Wonder how Putin is selling the threats of action against Sweden and Finland as aggression against Russia?

Too much testosterone. Judo, ice hockey, hunting, walking around in the snow with his shirt off.
Spent all this money on new "toys" desperate to play with them. He just loved sitting there telling the world to butt out or there would consequences the like the world has never seen before.

given Germany and Italy have already conceded defeat on sanctions I guess he doesn’t care

Can we somehow force the Germans and Italy into taking action?
