A quotation on a wall at the Scunthorpe Central community hub and library has been removed following pressure from residents who found it insensitive.

North Lincolnshire Council said it chose the wording "Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it" as one of a number of inspirational quotations to bring the space to life following a £1 million refurbishment of the building.

The authority said the wording, placed near the Citizens Advice area of the building, was a quote by the late Professor Stephen Hawking but it drew criticism from some residents who are unable to work and felt devalued by it.

The North Lincolnshire Labour Party said it had received correspondence from numerous residents and Labour councillor Andrea Davison contacted council chief executive Denise Hyde last weekend to ask for the wording to be removed."
Pressure leads to 'insensitive' quotation being removed by council

sounds a bit too similar to work will set you free which is at the entrance to Auschwitz to me.
Maybe work will bore your tits off but will give you the means to watch city and get pissed at the weekend would have been better.

Yes, I thought about that sign at Auschwitz as well. But even so, it just illustrates how anything you say can offend someone these days.

I think that the "great offended" are choosing the definition of the word "work" to fit an agenda, doing work isn't the same as doing a job or being employed for money. If people would be educated rather than offended then they would understand the true meaning, that working towards an objective, goal, working hard at relationships, working hard to be a good person, raise your children, etc, personal ambition is important to us as people and can only be a positive.

Life is so hard these days.

Try any passing comment. There is always someone ready to take it the wrong way.

It's never been easier for people to act like overly reactionary, entitled little cunts either, and they are grabbing the opportunity with both hands.

When the Tories destroyed the traditional industries in the 1980s, they also destroyed the strong work ethic that previously existed in the communites that worked in those industries and that attitude has remained to this day. They even encouraged people who weren't seriously looking for work to sign on the sick so as to massage the true unemployment figures.
