YEOVIL - Smaller squad than CCFC ??? (1 Viewer)

Just preparing myself for the oncoming 3rd Division (as you do) by looking at Yeovil's web page and in particular the Players Profile details.

Looks to me that they have only13 players with squad numbers consisting of:

2 x Goalkeepers
5 x Defenders
3 x Midfielders
2 x Strikers
1 x no designated position

Obviously out of date or is it ?

No way, hope it is true. It will be the first bit of good news in 6 months.

However if that is true wish we could play them 2 months in, not day one.

Welcome to league one and this is why even with the clueless one in charge we should be a top 10 team providing we make 5 or 6 signings. Squads are wafer thin and budgets scarce.

Last season Yeovil made 16 permanent and 17 loan signings according to their wiki page. That blows our 3 permanent, 1 short term and 3 loan signings out of the water.

It also lists 14 current players - one of them is 40 and another (the top scorer) seems off to Swindon

Also found themselves in the bottom three at Christmas, so got a new manager in.

Don't forget, some clubs - including Yeovil - have signed players who's registration comes into effect on July 1st; like with the Andy Johnson to QPR deal. Yeovil have signed Rueben Reed, plus one other on such terms. According to the BBC website, their squad numbers 31 people, although Nathan Jones, at 39 has retired from that number, and theyve lost Williams to Swindon as discussed. So allowing for players out and players in, it looks a squad of 30 players or so

Also got loads of loan players in, which was championed as a clever bit of work on here by some..

I thought that the consensus was that was a bit of lateral thinking that introduced players who might have proven useful, were they not manager by the most inept manager in northern Europe. I wonder how they'd have got on with their loan players and O'Driscoll in charge??

Thorn went to Doncaster?

I thnk they'd have done okay with O'Dricoll in charge without needing the disruption that Mackay caused with his genius loan plan.

Which tends to suggest you agree with me that sacking your manager in the hope that it'll stave off relegation doesn't always work? Indeed, you can end up in a whole worse position, eh?

The current squad position of many of our competitors means very little as most will have changes, additions, sales etc planned. At the moment we are planning to cash in wherever possible our best assets and promote increasingly younger kids to the fold who will cost next to nothing. Other clubs have sound financial planning and benefactors, we have a ruthless bunch of asset strippers............I still find it hard to blame our scout..............sorry manager !!

Couldn't have finished in much worse position than we did if we had changed the manager.

Ifs, buts and maybes, but the only definite is that we did get relegated without changing the manager.

But the answer wasn't to sack the manager, but back the manager.

Just like Notts Forest did when they were in trouble
Just like Milwall did when they were in trouble
Just like Bristol City did when they were in trouble

Can you see what I've done there?

Didn't Forest and Bristol City change their manager?

Doubt if you can see what i've done there.

How Forest ended up in a relegation battle in the first place with their resources remains a mystery to me. Not as big as Leicester coming nowhere near the play offs despite spending more than half of the Premier League, mind :thinking about:

Whatever reason they were there, When it came to the crunch. Their board looked at it and thought, it is going to cost us 6.5 millon if we get relegated.

Board "Steve how do you think we can stay up?"

SC "Get me these 5 on loan, it will cost you 500k in wages and will give you a good chance of saving 6.5 million from relegation"

Borad "I would like to stay in the championship, lets do it"

Result forest stay up

Coventry

Board "Andy what can we do to stay up?"

Andy " We have kids on the bench and kids in the team. If we cant sign permanent players I at least need some loanees, if we go down, it will cost the club 6.5 million"

Board "Ok you can have two loan signings but we have to pay their wages, so you must sell your only goal scorer, so effectively you only get one additional player and you lose your only goal scorer"

Andy "That does not sound like a good idea, how about getting me the loanees and keep the goal scorer and sell him in the summer, you will get less than a million for him and it may cause us to lose 6.5 million"

Board. "We have sold the top scorer"

Result = relegation

I was just about to write the very same words.

People who say what manager would come to us working with our budget, well they don't know that, some would, some would'nt

Until Thorn has gone and someone does come along and do better ,we all don't know

My opinion is that i would rather have someone here with more experience, and better man management.I beleieve we can't suffer his bad tactical slips and his poor man management this season, if we are going to be successful. What i am trying to say that Thorn himself will have to improve if the team are going to do better. He has to inspire all the lads especially the youngsters, and public criticisms of any of the youngsters have to stop. Be more positive Thorn and get behind them, all the time.
.
If SISU do go i also think Thorn will go with them, and the new owners will bring someone unrelated to the past in.

But the answers/opinions on all subjects concerning next season are all pure conjecture.

Nothing to do with O'Driscol then?

My view or Cotterills? My view being that he was sacked too soon and could have kept Doncaster up. The perils of sacking a manager too early methinks.

Cotterill - a terrible manager in my view - attributes their safety to the loan signings, but it does coincide also with O'Driscoll arriving to help the coaching. Be it squad members, or coaching support, Id still classify that as 'backing' the manager as opposed to sacking' the manager. Don't you think?

Bleeding hell! Someone does come along and do better? What guarantees are there of that? Like Saunders at Doncaster, for example?

Like Thorn or not, via necessity, he's blooded and nurtured some great young talent - who clearly respect him as evidenced via comments. What if someone comes in, sells those players to free up wages for 'trusted' talent that doesn't work? We sack yet again, but have lost all our youth too?

The reality is, Thorn should have been given freedom to add a sprinkling of quality to the young lads he'd nurtured through out of necessity. If he had been able to do so, I genuinely believe we'd still be a championship team

Someone could also come along and do worse, at least Thorn has the respect and relationship with all the young players that we will be relying on.
The hard truth is in 90% of cases, investment turns football clubs round then a good manager, there are exceptions...........Holloway and Blackpool and in reverse, the six-fingered brigade up the road, but generally a good combination of both will reap rewards.
We however have got no money and a manager learning his trade.
