Premier League academy teams will be allowed to play in the EFL Trophy next season after radical plans to revamp the competition were approved at the English Football League’s annual general meeting in Portugal.

Of the 21 existing category one academies - most of them belonging to top-flight teams - 16 are set to be invited to join a 64-team competition which will start with 16 groups of four before becoming a straight knock-out with a final at Wembley.

The Premier League is also understood to have provided £1m to create a total prize fund of £1.95m, with bonuses awarded for each win. The 16 elite academy sides will be evenly distributed throughout the groups with the 48 clubs from Leagues One and Two, with the whole competition running on a north/south basis until the final.

Each team will play each other once in the group stage, with the academy team getting just one home game. The knock-out stages will be single ties apart from the semi-finals, where there will be two legs.

The competition is currently without a title sponsor as Johnstone’s Paints’ contract expired last season, with Barnsley beating Oxford in the last JPT final.

The EFL announced that Ian Lenagan, the owner of Super League rugby league team Wigan Warriors and a former director of Oxford, had been voted in as its new chairman, replacing Greg Clarke.

But as with the vote on the EFL Trophy proposal, it is thought that it was far from unanimous with several clubs voicing their displeasure at the process.

It is also understood that there was some criticism of Lenagan’s record as an ambassador for League Two clubs while at Oxford.

They've held it there the past couple of years actually. Potentially back in the UK next year.

Will the games v the B team count as professional appearances for our players for example? As I would imagine the a players career stats won't say appearances for Chelsea B.....

Can we just get on with letting 10-15 of the more glamourous teams have five sides each to fill the leagues and prevent anyone else bothering to play football?

Final will be PL Academy A vs PL Academy B.

At least we won't have James Maddison scoring against us...

Would Swansea B versus Watford B fill a phone box let alone a final at Wembley .
Why do the footballing authorities try to prevent teams like the ones in league 1& 2,especially the smaller teams, a once in a lifetime footballing final appearance at Wembley, ah yes I've got it, MONEY.
Yet another immoral move from the tosses who run football in this country.

I reckon it is out of Man City, Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, City and Rochdale.

As least we might get better crowds and who knows, maybe we could still win it.

Just been shaking my head quizzically for the last few minutes.

I got nothing good to say about this plan. PL interests win out again. I hope the 2, 000 fans that show up to see Chelsea "B" vs. Arsenal "B" in the Final enjoy having plenty of room to lounge in full rows by themselves. The plan does nothing to overall support the purpose of this particular tournament.

Many people within the game suspect that the stronger League 1 and 2 teams will wipe the floor with Premier League U21 sides. Most U21 games are glorified practice games with barely a tackle being made
That's why the clubs look to loan out the better prospects to get experience where the result really counts
And they will cop elbows and crunching challenges from blokes who need to stay in the team to pay the mortgage

What are the rules for this? Can a player play first team games and drop down into the B team? I think some of these b sides are going to get embarrassed a tad

You know 16-17 years ago Stoke City didn't have a training ground and trained at the local university. There's hope for us yet!

Good point! Their "B" players afraid to be tackled will be a funny sight.

Also am I reading the set-up correct, it's a three game minimum first round round-robin? So, two extra guaranteed games, but one of those extra games being against the "B" team?

This is ridiculous , shit attendances and the first footstep into setting them into the football league are originally planned. It's shit being in this league

What a joke. Its a big enough struggle to get people to the early rounds as it is. Having more early games in a group with a PL youth team isn't going to help.

Been there for a few years now hasn't it. Surprised they didn't have it in France and then all go to the England games.

Lets just say you get a Man Utd v Liverpool final. How many will bother turning up to Wembley for that?
