I'm now convinced he needs to be hear 100% fit to perform.
I think the Sunderland home game was an outlier that muddied the waters a bit when assessing his comeback.

Which is certainly an issue when the alternative is rubbish.

He needs to be 100% fit to perform. Except when he doesn't.

He put in 1 decent performance post his come back. So it was an outlier. Strachan spoke about this ages ago, some players can get away with not being fully fit but others need their fitness levels to be spot on.
The alternative is he just couldn't be arsed which is a theory I'm not entertaining any more (for the time being at least)

I think it's confidence, which obviously correlates with fitness. That Sunderland game I'm pretty sure his first goal was his first shot? And it was a pretty speculative one, from then on he just looked really confident and up for it.

Sometimes I think he just doesn't have the belief. Definitely don't think it's about effort (that is a lazy criticism of most players imo).

Perhaps his playoff performances were an attempt to not risk injury ahead of playing for the US, but really in games like that you have to be fully committed as you can be damn sure the other side will be.

Why does 'a pair of goals' annoy me far more than it should?

At least 'a pair of pints' was done for comedic effect in Withnail And I.
But 'a pair of goals' does tend to give an air of sloppy journalism and an all round lack of understanding of football which would never be tolerated on SBT.

He didn’t. But that’s hindsight. You only have to look at Simms’ game time now to realise that Lampard thought a semi-fit Wright was a better option.

And he was wrong.

Now for the first leg you could maybe understand taking the risk.

And surely after an hour of both games you'd see that he was having no impact and brought him off for Simms.

Picking him for those games was an error. Not bringing him off was foolhardy,

It was bizarre and stubborn Frank couldn't see it.

If we have a fit Haji for 46 games, he will score so many goals. Looks quick, strong and up for it. Couple those things with his clear ability in front of goal it could be a very big season for him

Then sold for £30mill after the World Cup

What didn’t really help is that he was continually shifted to LW because EMC was struggling for fitness.

When he plays as the main striker, he plays with more freedom because he can roam, create overloads and not be burdened with too much defensive responsibilities.

This season will be massive for him and he needs to get 20+ goals this season.

I think we need autos this season so he can have a breather before those finals!

If goals are the benchmark he is on course to be better than Vik for us. Needs 8 in 31 to be ahead of Gyokeres tally.
