Who is replacing the goals Wright scores if we sell him? Who replaces Simms? There’s no need to rip up the entire strike force

That's for our scouting team to sort, it's useless asking that question on here.

Who'd heard of Hamer or Gyokeres before we signed them?

Or Dovin, MVE, Sakamoto or Torp

I do know this much, if we sold Wright and Simms and brought in Josh Sargent from Norwich, we'd be over the moon.

Exactly and at the end of the day, it’s for a player that’s had one good half season. For context, Simms scored more goals than that in the 2nd half of 23/24 so it is a possibility that this player just had a fine run of form.

If we sell Haji Wright, we need to spend a lot of money getting in a ‘guaranteed’ proven striker and can’t afford to chance it to be honest.

Josh Sargent is the best striker in the league imo. He’s like Aguero in his prime for Man City; misses at least 1/3 of the season but will get goals. He almost definitely won’t go to a Championship rival so we need to accept that this just isn’t going to happen.

For the amount he’d cost and the games he’d miss, I don’t think he’d be worth it. He's not that much better a striker than Wright that it’d be worth trading him for a player that’ll be almost guaranteed to play less games.

If we’re going to continue to put a high number of crosses into the box - there is a real argument for moving on Wright for 12-15m and getting Salech for 6-8m

Watching his goals for Cardiff he is so good in the air & not sure Wright fits Lampards system

I have no doubt Wright is a better player but that doesn’t make a better team - in a counter attacking team I would have Wright all day long

Okay I’ll bite lol.

Not going to argue on Riis but focus on Salech against Wright and Simms. FIrst thing to focus on, is the teams the players are at. Cardiff being relegated reflects the quality, therefore you’d assume chances are more limited compared to Coventry.

Going to base this on the championship stats. Simms played 2,287 mins this season, Wright played 1,947 mins and Salech 1,227. Goals wise, Wright has more on 12, then Salech on 8, then Simms on 6. Per 90, Salech has the most goals on 0.56, Wright on 0.55 and Simms on 0.24.

Salech has the most shots per 90 on 3.17 and shots on target at 1.48. Wright is second on 2.91 and 1.25. Salech has the best dribbling success on 57.9%. While Wright only is higher in this regard in touches in the opposition box (7.35 to 5.36).

But I think the real big reason I’d do the switch is the aerial figures, Salech won 6.91 aerial duels per 90 which is the best in the league. Wright won 2.68 and simms won 3.07.

I can get why people would keep Wright as in spite of this I think in the right system he’s the better player. But in our system, I think Salech would suit it better.

the dust has settled for me regarding Sunderland, wright isnt mediocre, he scored nearly 20 goals the previous season, and 12 this year. the problem as said above isnt skill/talent, its mental.

lets give him a break, hes been put left and centre forward, injured for what 4 months? and has had two months to play until the end of the season, prob lacking match fitness and match focus.

give the guy a pre season, get fully fit, focused and come back leading the line, theres not reason why we cant have a 20 goal a season striker right there.

want to lump him out, and get in some other champ striker with 10-15 goals? i wouldnt risk it, wright has already proven he is capable.

Part of me hopes he’s got BTA confused for Wright and thinks we are talking about selling him.

I'm not talking about Wright...
That's a completely different conversation about whether it would be worth taking the money if it was a decent offer or not, people seem to be really struggling with this.
Simms and BTA should be moved on regardless if we can get near what we paid for them,

Simms last season genuinely played like he'd never seen a football before and looks so out of his depth in the current setup it's lunacy to keep him on for another season.

His form isn't going to magically improve when it's quite obvious he can't do what's being asked of him.

This is it. If someone offers £3m or thereabouts for either Simms/BTA then they can go. If someone offers £15m for Wright you’d certainly have something to think about.

Completely fair take, ultimately I get it especially as the players suggested are a bit of an unknown. Just worry he’s a bit of square peg in a round hole for this system.

How can Wright be described as mediocre

Yea he's out of form and doesn't seem to be able to play as a lone target man but he's still a quality forward player at this level.

0.55 goals per 90, same as Sargent, piroe, latte lath etc.

Over a full season he is going to be 20+ goals in league no problem.

Sadly I very much doubt that will be the case.

As much as he needs to leave moving Simms on will probably be easier said than done due to wages.

They were about £3.5 million each right? (assuming Simms has hit none of his add ons.)
Think someone wanted to give us our money back for BTA in Jan so hopefully that comes back around for starters.

you all know simms has the quality, he isnt wright, and he isnt viktor, he isnt godden, he hast to be used to his best attributes, which was again done a couple of seasons ago. Robins prob used him in a different way than lampard expects, and i think saddles said before lamp has been asking him to do things and hes not doing it. but that doesnt take away from the point he does have quality.

I think Simms has the ability but needs to develop which I think he’ll struggle to do so from the bench.

IMO the strikers just don’t suit Lampards tactics and I don’t see him changing tbh as it seems to suit the rest of the squad pretty well

Josh Sargent. That's who we should be going for. Would need to sell Wright & one of BTA & Simms I would think to even be in with a chance.
Sargent, BTA, Obikwu & Bassette as the main strikers next season.

Aerial duals isn’t a particularly useful stat in of itself because we don’t play long ball. The important stat is headers scored which he’s scored a good few goals in his career.

This season, we’ve scored more headed goals than the EFL and just about every major European league this season (19). The conclusion that you and many others have seemed to make is that we’ve scored many headers and therefore need to direct everything into signing players good in the air with little after thought (Moore and Morris being better examples of this thread of thought). It’s not illogical, but it’s clear we’re honing in on it too much.

We need to diversify the chances we create because there’s a risk that we’re becoming overly reliant on headed goals. Lampard has already touched on it as being a potential problem if that’s all we revert back to in the final third. Looking at how the season ended, there were games that the opposition were effective in defending against Plan A and we struggled for Plan B.

Realistically, we’re probably not going to score that many headed goals next season, much less improve it so we need something different in the final third imo.
