Maybe we should have spent 200k on increasing his wages instead of buying Bakayoko.

Money which came from McNulty's transfer fee. He wanted to go, he got what he wanted. He won't be coming back, let's move on.

The main issue with McNulty (ironically) is what Paul Clement hates - poor fitness levels It sounds a cliche as every manager wants his players fit as a fiddle. But Clement in particular demands his players to be at the pinnacle of their fitness. Which isn't surprising given the calibre of player he's used to coaching at the likes of PSG, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. So when McNulty comes along puffing after 60 minutes at the end of pre-season with his beer belly firmly still intact it's not surprising he's not getting game time as he may struggle to keep up with the pace of the Championship. It really does puzzle me why a Championship manager took a chance on him because although he's a fantastic player his fitness levels are appalling.

He may prove me wrong but in a year with us his fitness was often brought into question - and I wouldn't want to take anything away from his fantastic but the fact of the matter is you can get away with poor fitness far more in League Two than you can in the Championsip if you have the quality to make up for it....

I see where you’re coming from but McNulty’s fitness definitely improved whilst he was with us and there was no way he was as unfit as you’re suggesting. If he was that unfit he wouldn’t of been able to have the movement he offered on and off the ball.

If what you say about Clement is right, then the man’s a fool. He has a professional scouting team that should have probably checked out the player over a period of time, rather than just Sky+ ing our Play Off Games.

Expecting to have that elite level of athetlticism from a League 2 striker that can’t get in the Scotland team is the equivalent of pitching up at a Peugeot garage and expecting to get a car that can do 0-60 in 2 seconds flat. Laughable.

What makes you think he's on more than 6k at Reading?

It was pretty damning that they had Baldock injured or suspended on Saturday but bought someone else in to the team and then when it wasn't working bought someone else off the bench. He's 5th choice there now.

Think the "one of the best we have seen" was about Dublin.

It definitely improved I won't deny that but believe me his fitness at times was as bad as I'm saying. There were numerous games last season where he desperately needed to be taken off but because MR is stubborn and because of his scoring record - he was effectively untouchable.

I'm no expert on Paul Clement, I'm simply rehashing what a friend of mine (who's also season ticket holder at Reading) has said. But whoever has done his scouting more than likely got a bollocking. But you just have to look at some of the other incoming transfers he brought in to find out what kind of player he prefers. Meyler, Baldock and Yiadom are all hard working and have good stamina.

McNulty wanted to leave to progress his career so I doubt an extra £1,000 or £2,000 on top of whatever he was earning would have got him to stay. Works out for some players, hasn’t for him so far, he’ll just drop down to a L1 club again if it doesn’t in the long term

McNulty's agent must be one smooth motherf*cker. Selling a player to a club that didn't even want him while collecting a nice fee.

Cash back!

I’d have McNulty back and if you don’t like that stance then suck it, sideways

Yes, but he would need to start scoring right away, not half way through like last season

Lot of comments from Reading fans along the line of ‘what a waste of money’ and ‘definitely a league two player’

I was amazed a Championship club moved for him. Barnsley or Sunderland would have been far more suitable to see if he could score regularly in a top end L1 club but oh well, he’s got to take a chance and back his talent

The move was strange really anyway. They signed Sam Baldock about 2 days later

Would I have McNulty back on loan, it’s a no.
We should stick with supporting Chaplin a player signed as a replacement to McNulty and he should remain just that.

At this point last season McNulty had only scored 1 league goal which was a gift at Grimsby. He’d shown he had the ability and MR backed him weekly saying he would break 20 goals, just as he is with Chaplin this season.

It’s just gonna take Chaplin time to bed in having moved away from the only footballing setting he’s known and to me he looks like a young man carrying a price tag and expectation he’s gonna hit the ground running and replicate his friend McNultys 2018 exploits.

It will come for him.

He had a chance to put Reading 2-0 up, went through on goal and put it wide when he should have scored.
