it has to be russel slade. terrible football terrible results

thorn did ok when marlon king was here

and the season we got relegated we took it to penultimate game iirc after another season where sisu slashed budget, funny how relegation followed both years...

Bloody hell, this is a difficult one.
I had my first season ticket in 1976. I think all the managers have been poor/ average since I 've been going except the following:
Gordon Milne
John Sillett
Mark Robins.
...most I've forgotten about , such was the impression they left on me . Slade was amongst the worst though, and that's saying something. .

Tat's why it's Slade and not Thorn in my view. Thorn was thrust into the job by inept owners and fans proclaiming he was the savoir when he clearly wasn't up to the job, not his fault so much. Slade was supposed to be a proper football manager bought in who could turn us around and improve things and the way he failed was so miserable, if you take out cup games his win ratio is something like 4%.

It was thorns fault he never tried to improve himself, made no effort to even get the club into a disciplined regime.

He took the job

He was a disaster

side note-excellent co commentator and sad it came to an end with a racist rant i hope he regrets and would take back if he could.

The problem was we couldn’t afford his wishlist, but you-know-who kept writing the cheques anyway ...

Looking back , I really don't think he was Andy Thorn. When I look at that moment Wimbledon won the F.A. Cup and see Andy Thorn jumping on the back of Dave Beasant I know what Andy Thorn looked like. What we got wasn't Andy Thorn was it ?

Orange Ken when he sat on the bench thinking he was a manager.

The worst was Slade and I think I said it was a disaster at the time

Thorn, Slade and Reid stick out as the worst. Special mention for Coleman too — should’ve done better with the resources he had.

It’s funny to see how some posters are rewriting history by saying Thorn was a ‘cheap’ appointment by SISU to reduce costs. That’s not the case. The majority of Cov fans, including myself, wanted to see him given a chance as full-time manager. From there, he was bad, and it was clear we needed to let him go early on in L1.

yeah i dont really have to much of an issue with thorn, my frustration comes with not changing it up when it went bad

we have a record of saving seasons with sackings. whenever we dont we get relegated (thorn, slade)

It really annoyed me that we gave him a full summer transfer window for recruitment then sacked him 3 games into the season. Should have been replaced in the summer really.

Speaking of, has anyone heard how Thorn is getting on? Last I heard there was rumours he'd had a heart attack and then absolute radio silence since...

No he should have been replaced in the previous September

As for recruitment he had little interest or involvement in it apparently - same as summer training and preparation - or any training at all really.

Reid and Coleman for me. Big names but left the club at n worse positions then when they arrived. My expectations were high for both but quickly became disappointed.

Boothroyd played his team negatively. A far better team than how they performed.

Spade: took a sinking ship and scuttled it.

Thorn just out of depth.

Downiest: talked s good game but it was never the one I watched.

For once we've got an embarrassment of riches

Reid - turned a team that appeared to be improving the season previously to relegation fodder
Slade - he inherited an atrocious squad but his signings made it worse, e.g. Clarke
Coleman - he had one of the better squads we've had post relegation (it wasn't as a brilliant as some say) but he didn't get us any higher than where we were when he took over

Add to that, worst assistant / director of football:

Jim Smith - the decision to bring this dinosaur in completely derailed the season (probably alongside the sale of Lee Carsley), our squad in the first season in Division 1 was strong enough to go straight back up. Once we'd failed at the first attempt the writing was on the wall for the long term

I would double like this if I could. Exactly right. The embarrassment of riches comment made me laugh out loud.

Question marks about Reid's commitment as well and I'd throw Coleman into the same bracket.

Mcallister - well we didn't learn after Butcher did we. Big name players with no managerial experience = recipe for disaster. Throw in the player-coach role and failure is more or less assured. I know there are a few exceptions (Dalglish etc.) but few and far between.

Are you pissed up already CCFC4life? Big Ron was a total disaster. And don't get me talking about Strachan - given the money and team he had at his disposal it was a total xxxxxxxx disgrace to get relegated.

Slade.
Slade
& Slade

Statistically he is our worst manager since WW2. Absolutely dreadful. Made me ashamed to be a Coventry City fan.

Thorn did what I thought was the impossible.

Made Terry Butcher look like a good manager.

Spot on about 'spade' he dug the hole deeper and just couldn't get out of it.

Thorn, Never manger materiel. Even admitted himself. Just a cheap option. Thanks SISU. Full marks for trying though.

Thorn.

Some say Thorn wasn't a manager. They are right, he wasn't. He was a joke.

Got to be Reid and then Coleman.

Slade, Thorn etc never had the squad of players the above two had. Not saying that they were good managers but it’s a fucking crime that Reid and Coleman didn’t do better.

Honourable mention to Reid’s assistant Jim Smith who was the real manager as Reid was never fucking here and he brought in his mates from Derby who were fucking useless.

Nilsson should’ve got us back up with the squad we had. Strachan did handicap him a little with the start, I know people on here disagree but selling Aloisi for 650k in that summer and buying Hughes for 5 million and a penny was unbelievably bad business.

I thought he came in under Nilsson? Either way the old pals act didn’t work with the signings of Carbonarie and Trollope.

Thorn was an absolute joke of an appointment and in typical Sisu fashion was the cheap option. The man didn’t have any backbone and should have resigned straight away when he was humiliated and undermined by Ken Delieu sitting on the bench with him.

That was the intention but all thorn was ever interested in was money - public humiliation meant nothing to him. You could have marched him to the centre of the pitch and poured excrement on his head and he’d have asked for another bucket if he got a bonus
