Work to regenerate a key city centre site finally gets underway this week following years of planning and months of preparation work.

The site, formerly home to the Royal Mail sorting office, will come transformed as five large residential blocks aimed at the student market make their mark on the city’s skyline.

The complex will eventually house around 1100 students, but phase one will see the delivery of three of the five blocks totalling 721 beds, which sit on a three storey plinth. The plinth contains the entrances to both the student accommodation and two new retail units.

The scheme is being progressed by Barberry Developments and Coventry University, and detailed planning approval was received from Coventry City Council at the beginning of March this year. Phase one will be open in time for the 2018/19 academic year.

Barberry Developments acquired the site in early 2011 which was then subject to a series of proposals that failed to get off the ground.

Following a lack of interest in proposals that included a large supermarket, a retail/office scheme and an open market residential development, Barberry finally struck a deal with Coventry University in July 2015, exchanging contracts on a deal worth £54 million to deliver much needed student accommodation.

Previous Proposals

2011 – Supermarket Scheme

2013 – Mixed-Use (Office/Retail) Scheme

2014 – Residential Scheme
