Got caned by the head Mr Thompson for fighting outside the woodwork block right below is window! Of course I decked the class bully so it was worth it. I was in Smith-Clarke. In those days teachers would pick on you in the class line and make fun of you and inflict pain!! There was a math teacher notorious for it. There was also a pervert gym teacher Mr Baker, who would often place a paper basket over his head and creepily watch us in the showers. How naive we were at 13/14? How times have changed.

That's what I've been saying the council should do for a while now. Instead of being seen to block things, like they were with the Butts, get right behind the club and put things on a plate for SISU. Then they have to either go through with what they've been promising or admit is all BS.

Yes, I remember him, Baker, watching us in the showers. His favourite exercise for us was we lie on our backs and hold our legs a bit above the ground and apart. He walked up and down controlling- he could then see everything we had... Yes, we were naive. I had to go to Thompson's deputy, R E S Jones, for fighting our bully..... Didn't get caned though. It was the right thing to do. Never had any problems from the bully again.

Paxman ll what year was that ? The reason I ask you is I to got caned for fighting the class bully outside the woodwork block ,
I put him down but on the way up he picked up a stone and threw it at me witch hit me on the head , my head needed stitches .

But still got caned by the headmaster , but i can't remember his name .

And those Teachers would have been locked up if they had behaved like that today .

I suggested it in here a few months ago. Especially for the academy as ideally the land is to be used for educational purposes.
I was shot down by the usual few who know more than everyone else.
I was told it is too small and already allocated for something else

Ha that's funny. It was not me! The kid I had a fight with was called 'Bennett' not so much a bully but thought he was the king pin and I had to put him in his place when he came after me. May have been Pete Bennett. Of course we ended up good friends! Circa 67' 68' i think.
As Brylowes says our world back then was a very different place and today corporal punishment is of course banned and weirdo paedophile types are soon caught or fail a back ground check long before being in that post. A bit of corporal punishment never did me any harm tbf or the discipline around the school. The Pedo' stuff with Baker and a colleague of his has another back story though involving a school camping trip to N Wales involving my mate. were you at the school around that time? PM me if you like.

I remember it ending for Baker with the school trip to Wales. The kids were in my year and I knew them vaguely. ( I thought there were 2 kids involved, but I don't know many details).

I got caned as well once, but got whacked on the arse more times with the board compass in maths or the pump ( more like the predecessor of trainers ) in sport. The cane had to be witnessed and recorded in the punishment book. The others weren't and were more frequent- I suspect they were illegal as not recorded.

Some teachers liked caning kids on the arse or using other things. Others didn't.

You'd remember the head's name if you were there in Thompson's time.

He took over when the school was a shambles and introduced discipline. His aim was to make the comprehensive system work. The school was large and with so many kids, discipline was the only way.

We had to wear school caps for the first 2 years. Strictly enforced.

That was out of fashion at other schools- except grammar schools.

He told us that, in addition to wanting to be on a par with grammar schools reputation wise, it was all about discipline. He forced us to conform for the first 2 years, after that he had us. Or at least that was the plan.

He left the slogan "we want homework" on the wall of the gym to show how desperate the kids were under his predecessor.

Actually wanting homework....

It was a Sports college so shouldn't take much to get it upto standard.
Most of it can be put in one area then the rest could still be housing if they want to.

Hi Nick. Maybe we should have an OBs and Paedo section elsewhere. Unless touched up during training, not football related!

Was there 79-86 in Sparks house, great days, although some questionable teachers, can't remember his name but he used to come into the showers and shower with the boys, all seems innocent but you start to wonder know.

House master I do remember though Roy England (or Teddy Boy Roy), great chap, really help the boys in the house, got on well with him, as I say great days and was a very good school then, only bettered by Bablake and Henry's.

Just didn't realise what was going on, how long before somebody finally clocked onto Savile.

It was a great school so many positives, teachers were teachers back then they taught you rather than read from a Gov supplied book on alternative teaching as we are seeing today. Always after school activities, kids were encourage to stay back then rather then removed from the premises ASAP as they are today.

Remember being sent to head (Hogarth - I believe) for throwing snowballs in the library whist in lower 6th form, just a few months after standing infront of him 1st day back in 6th form with purple hair after trying to die my bleached hair back to the normal colour (Suspended for a week!!)

Any thought of a stadium on this land is doomed, no road infrastructure big enough to take 1-2K crowds let alone 15-20K.

Peter Rossbourgh, who was doing his bit for the deprived community before heading back into the private school sector, led a school assembly in which he explained the importance of caps, his England caps.

Best teacher ever, my captain my captain!
